One of the most beautiful and unique cello solos- from Bartok 4. Iâll post the rest of the solo soon! Live from Series of Four in Copenhagen a few years ago- with the #doverquartet of course!

Understanding Schubert đ§
In the Schubert trio solo, Shaw teaches us about the importance of finding certain colors for the melancholy character.

The âFolksinessâ in the Brahms Quintet đ»
Camden Shaw shows why the Brahms Piano Quintet solo comes alive when your rhythm isnât in lockstep with the piano. On paper the sixteenths match, but if you line them up perfectly the line turns stiff.

This traditional Christmas song is honestly an AMAZING piece of music. I hope at least 3% of you will listen to the end- the writing is just Amazing. I had the sudden urge to record it last night- I will make no apologies for my wool socks and clothes in general lol! Iâm off grid in my cabin and itâs what I was wearing đ
Anyway- this melody has some of the most beautiful color changes- (that high C# when the sun comes out???) it almost feels like a Schubert song at times (I almost did the intro to Ave Maria at the beginning because it feels so similar!)
Anyway, happy holidays everyone. Cheers to what the beauty of music can do for the soul.

I use my face sometimes as a finger!
Iâm definitely not afraid of slides- but âtransportationâ slides (NOISES, rather than expressive shifts) are to be avoided. Here in Mendelssohn Op. 44 # 3 the same motif is played 5 TIMES in a row- and if you donât go up the C string, you STILL make an ugly slide in order to play the A-flat on the G string.
I donât do this often, but I will confess that in the @doverquartet Beethoven cycle recordings I used my face in 4 instances. And I stand by them all!!

When âOut of Tuneâ Sounds Better đ»
Yesâsometimes âout of tuneâ is right. In an anguished spot, push the Eâź a touch high and the Dâ a touch low to stretch the semitoneâthat expressive intonation feels uneasy on purpose. Add a taste of vibrato in the slide and the line cries.

Was truly starstruck to be on NPR talking about the @doverquartet âs new album âWoodland Songsâ- an album showcasing the rich musical heritage of North America and exploring the influence of Native and Indigenous music, past and present. As always it was an absolute pleasure to chat with the amazing Chickasaw classical composer @jerodtate who composed a truly magnificent new quartet for this album!!
