On Wednesday was the book launch of Ungrounding by Eyal Weizman. Amazing and devastating. Amazed this book got made in the first place (what a miracle, how did you do it?). Amazed by the scale and care of the work being done by @ForensicArchitecture —both in its intellectual ambition and in the necessity that drives it, the granular documentation of Gaza’s devastation. Listening to the beautiful and heartfelt responses by @susan_schuppli , @basak.ertur , Kodwo Eshun (@otolithgroup ), Suhail Malik and Matthew Fuller, I was moved by the insane level of care, intelligence, and collective commitment —while the institution, and higher education in general, is literally being dismantled around them. @goldsmithsuol produced so much and is being demolished so hard (3 restructures in 5 years!). And also: this is outstanding scholarly research, perhaps one of the most relevant answers to the question of what architecture's contribution to society can be… One of the main questions perhaps that the department was set up around in the first place, one that we are still grappling with, two decades since the beginnings of @researcharchitecture . “We agreed that a time of crisis demands balancing urgency with historical consciousness” Başak said, twice, quoting from the book. Much much gratefulness for your hard labour. #ForensicArchitecture @goldsmithsforpalestine  #EyalWeizman #BasakErtur #susanschuppli @cra_goldsmiths

Céline Condorelli | INFRASTRUCTURE “To speak from infrastructure is to speak from the supporting conditions of things, and it is also to speak from a position of complicity, of maintenance, of shared inhabitation.” Céline Condorelli (@celinecondorelli ) makes exhibitions, installations, publications, sculptures and architectures. She is interested in how our encounter with the material world takes place by relying on it, and that all human action is dependent on  countless structures of support mostly taken for granted, and therefore appearing invisible. She was the 2023 National Gallery Artist in Residence and was one of the founding directors of Eastside Projects, Birmingham, UK. She is the author and editor of several publications including Support Structures published by Sternberg Press (2009/2014). She is professor in the Exhibition Design and Scenography department at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe (HfG Karlsruhe). Image: © nationalarchives.gov.uk, Open Government Licence

Tomorrow marks a transition for Dedication (To The Sea, To The Sea)- end of triennial era & move towards permanent public art work for the Town as part of Folkestone A Brighter Future, our local levelling up project. It has been an honour to support the development of this incredible, bold & buoyant work by artist @celinecondorelli for @creativefstone Joined by a procession of soft banners, these kinetic flags will carry future visitors from the town centre to the sea, grounding them in our reciprocal relationship with the channel & positioning us within the coastal ecosystem beside the more than human. Céline weaves the visual language of international maritime code to share messages of care & solidarity - “to those who set sail to save lives”, “safe passage”, “into the night” - honouring all who travel across the sea & invoking the spirit of Rosa Luxenberg & her work to free people from the oppressive aspects of capitalist society. Céline connected with local people who are working on & with & for the sea to inform the work, taking people out to sea on Folkestone Voyager to record some of these conversations so they could be shared with the triennial audience (link in bio to podcast). On a stormy summer day we battled sea sickness to explore our responsibilities for & responses to living by the sea with sea swim coach/ ecotherapist @kirsty_sea_swim_coach , geologist/researcher #sanjeevgupta @imperialcollege , Corynne Elliott- founder of @we.are.blackfish , Creative Producer/Activist @rejoice_satyr , Triennial Curator #SorchaCarey & our skipper #NealBoosey. Captured dexterously by @noiseandorder , we shared personal & professional experiences & dedications on the swaying boat, weaving intergenerational & ancestral practices & narratives. … and invited everyone to join us on the launch weekend in a sea dip & salt ritual on sunny sands beach, overlooked by two of Céline’s flags, spinning in the maritime winds. With French/Kentish/Cornish sea salts on our skins & on our tongues, we launched this potent work. Fabricated & installed by @fluxmetal @paintworksukltd @sdprojects.uk

Seeing Niki de Saint Phalle Pontus Hulten and Tinguely’s show @le_grand_palais somewhat helped restore my faith in humanity a little today. The sheer fun and irreverence, the rage and laughter exploding everywhere and all of it in and through the radical visions of museums that Hulten made happen. Completely serious and also so light hearted. Refuelling the tank of good will and productive otherwise in spite of prevailing patriarchy and fascisms everywhere. #nikidestphalle #pontushulten #tinguely #lesnanas #hon

One caption from the archive: “Liege”: in english lounger, sofa, couch Eileen Gray's lounger, 'Fauteuil Transatlantique', was inspired by the reclining chairs used on the decks of ocean liners. Named after the great vessels that crossed the Atlantic Ocean – transatlantic – this chair evokes long journeys at sea, but also the relaxing space of time outside work or constraints: leisure. It was made in 1927 for the terrace of her holiday house in Cap Martin, in the south of France, overlooking the sea (which is where it's photographed here). The liner deckchairs were re-interpreted many times and became common for example for gardens both public and private, or at the beach. They were inspired by the typical deckchair associated with leisure, and also the chaise-longue or reclining chair which, since the 19th century, had become central to the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis – a disease for which doctors recommended reclining in fresh air and sunlight. The lounger is a chair designed for recovering: from work, from illness. Reflecting two crucial modern concerns – leisure and health – the reclining chair became a 20th-century design classic, both on land and at sea. I saw 'Fauteuil Transat' the first time at the @centrepompidou in 2013, in the #eileengray retrospective. I think there is a beige one @vamuseum #eileengray #centrepompidou #vamuseum #lounger #leisure #health #recovery #deckchair

I am looking forward to returning to @tenstakonsthall in a few weeks for the opening of Soft Logic, Textile action, politics and pedagogy, curated by Bella Rune with Cecilia Widenheim. With With @damien.a.a #DamienAjavon, @hera.buyuktasciyan_studio #HeraBuyuktasciyan, @luca__lee__frei #LucaLeeFrei, @gidree.bawlee #GidreeBawlee, and @bellarune #BellaRune —. The exhibition invites us to rethink what we “know” through other logics, mostly using fabric as a lens. I will present a new installation continuing my work with the phenomenally rich heritage of textiles from the Maghreb, pursuing abstraction as a language for action articulated through women’s work. I will bring some new enormous rugs weaved by the wonderful Fatima, Rachida, Najat, Oumelkhyat, and Naima in Sidi El Mokhtar, produced by @bibi_art_carpet and through the continuing support of @thinkart_ma #SoftLogic #tenstakonsthall @ceciliawidenheim

The last post about puppets / pupi is making me think of one of my favourite shows I ever did, Puppet Show, which I curated with Tom Bloor @tombloor_ in 2013 in and with @eastsideprojects , touring to @grundyartgallery and @gavlekonstcentrum . Invite and poster by @jameslangdon.eu With: • Alexander Calder • Dan Graham • Edwina Ashton @edwinaashton • Geoffrey Farmer • Heather & Ivan Morison @heatherandivanmorison • Japanther • Jean Painlevé • Jiří Trnka • Monster Chetwynd (then Marvin gaye chetwynd) • Pedro Reyes @pedroreyesmx • Pier Paolo Pasolini • Pierre Huyghe @huyghepierre • Rodney Graham • Simon Popper @p.o.p.p.e.r • Simon Starling @simonstarling • Tony Oursler @tonyoursler From the press release I read that Eastside Projects was finally revealed as a “puppet state” — an art organisation taken over by impersonators and impostors, a collection of characters that criticise, undermine and protest in the place and voice of others. The power of puppets lies in their potential for performative as well as sculptural articulation, as constructed selves and bodies, that have the faculty to speak through someone else’s voice, and are made of parts. Unlike humans, who require an internal capacity for voice, language, movement and intention, puppets channel external forces in order to form presence, speech, and authorship. Performances including Who’s Got the Ribbon Now? by Edwina Ashton and Empire of Dirt and Nuclear Family (Three Tragedies and a Satire) by Heather & Ivan Morison took place at various points throughout the show. —— 📍 @eastsideprojects 📍 @grundyartgallery 📍 @gavlekonstcentrum #PuppetShow #EastsideProjects #GrundyArtGallery #GavleKonstcentrum #TomBloor #AlexanderCalder #DanGraham #EdwinaAshton #GeoffreyFarmer #HeatherAndIvanMorison #Japanther #JeanPainlevé #JiriTrnka #MondterChetwynd #PedroReyes #PierPaoloPasolini #PierreHuyghe #RodneyGraham #SimonPopper #SimonStarling #TonyOursler #Puppetry #Puppets #performance #Sculpture #PuppetState #Impostors
