Celina J. August’s work lives in the “in-between”. A space defined by transition, becoming and breaking. Shaped by a life of constant movement, their practice explores the feeling of existing between places, times and identities. This reflects a „liquid modernity“ where nothing is solid and the only permanence is change.
In a liquid life, flexibility is a necessity, but it often means having no roots and no ground to hold onto. August explores this instability by finding the liquidity within solid materials.
Ceramic sculptures morph familiar natural forms into an unknown shape language, appearing as if they are still growing or decaying.
By often using triptychs, August allows the past, present, and future to overlap, holding the work in a state of perpetual flux.

i’m continually deeply touched by how nature moves through us, shaping what we create without us even realising. The forms feel like a remembrance of objects, forms, textures we’ve seen and held inside. Only afterward did I realise that this piece echoed a bluebottle jellyfish I saw in Australia years ago on a bewildered beach.
