Last moments in South Africa - I went down to Bredasdorp for meeting and interviewing noise musician Jacques van Zyl and he drove me down to the southern-most tip of Africa.
I don't know how long it will take me to edit and upload all the interviews I've been doing with musicians and organisers from Africa, Asia and Latin America in the past years but that will happen one day... In any case, there will be a one hour presentation including some extracts in November.
I'll be very shortly in Berlin next week, then in Naples for a talk and collaborative improvisation at San Pietro a Majella Music Conservatory, in Naples, Italy.
Manuella Blackburn, Jean-François Laporte, Benjamin Thigpen will also give some workshops.

I'm in Bloemfontein and will head to Cape Town tonight.
Entanglements Festival part 2 will take place over the weekend and there will be tons of concerts, some workshops and a documentary film screening about some drone and experimental musicians from South Africa. Full programme : https://entanglements.africa/

But why in Bloemfontein ask me some ?
I love discovering random places, it's not the first time I decide to go in a small town or a village and see what happens.
What happened is that I walked 31km yesterday, the only sunny day and took many photos, filmed a bit and did some film recordings. I would have not been able to do this in Cape Town or Johannesburg so I'm happy I spent some time in the middle of nowhere, outside of the centre in fact.
And I've been hosted by very kind people here (thanks to @waailit_willekat )
But the bus trip was a pain (have you ever travelled 400+km on a wet seat in a bus that smells like chemicals and mould ? But even more painful for those who went down to Cape Town 1000km further, ahah).
I'll be in CT until 5 May then I'm still undecided. Botswana or Lesotho. If some of you want to meet, drop me a line. I'll be in Joburg on 10 May too.
I added a lot of artists again, especially from South Africa but also Cameroon and Botswana and hundreds more from various countries will be slowly but surely added : /african&asian_database.htm
Tuesday 28 April (today), 21h (Berlin time), Syrphe monthly radio show on Colaboradio/Freie Radios Berlin-Brandenburg.

Entanglements in Johannesburg went very well, many great artists, welcoming people and nice atmosphere.
I'm really happy to have performed there and met a lot of musicians I didn't know before as well as old friends.
I found some time to make a few video interviews and will make some more in Cape Town where I will play next weekend and in Johannesburg again later.

This is another audio test video recorded by Cedrik Fermont at Dawan Shiju on December 26 of last year.

In December 2025, after eight years, our old friend Cedrik Fermont embarked on another China tour. His Shenzhen stop on December 26, 2025, was hosted at Pingshan Art Museum, featuring a live performance and a lecture. He shared his book Not Your World Music, which focuses on Southeast Asian noise art and won the Golden Nica Award for Digital Music and Sound Art at the 2017 Ars Electronica Festival.
This was once again a long-distance, extended tour lasting five months and covering more than a dozen countries and regions. Cedrik Fermont departed from Berlin in early November 2025 and will return to Europe in April 2026. On Facebook, Cedrik shared his reasons for frequent touring: to enjoy hearty and delicious vegetarian food, to escape the harsh winter in Berlin, to hold concerts, and to meet more artists.
Together with Fancy from Pingshan Art Museum, I conducted an in-depth interview with Cedrik. I also introduced dze.labs, which I oversee, and invited him to test our self-developed geophone — then at its fifth demo version. On the afternoon of December 26, we conducted a lengthy recording session at Dawanshiju, the ancient architectural complex in Shenzhen.
Through 17 rounds of revisions and adjustments, we overcame bottlenecks in materials and technology, and fully resolved all inherent issues of the dze geophone. After repeated testing in diverse environments and scenarios, we finalized the official version. I can confidently say that the dze geophone is now the world’s finest geophone of its kind. We plan to officially release it at the end of May 2026.

Next week in Johannesburg and then Cape Town, in between I should be in Gaborone (trying to get a gig there or somewhere else in Botswana) and after Cape Town, I might play in Maputo, hopefully, if not I'll either travel a bit in South Africa or visit some friends in eSwatini or Lesotho and do some field recordings in the mountains.

Entanglements welcoming a large variety of performers from Africa and beyond 🌱
Born in Lubumbashi, Cedrik Fermont is a Berlin-based Belgian-Congolese composer, musician, mastering engineer, author, radio host, concert organiser, independent researcher and label manager (at Syrphe) who operates in the field of noise, electronic, electroacoustic, sound art, and experimental music since 1989.
Chantelle Gray is a professor in philosophy with a long-standing interest in experimental and avant-garde music. Initially trained in piano, she now uses modular synthesizers, a chromaplane and gestural composition to create soundscapes. She is a member of the Sonic Exploration Network of Southern Africa (Sensa) and has written on the elision of women in the history of electronic and experimental music, drone music and Deep Listening. She released her first solo album in 2025.
Die Fitz Frekwensie is a project of sonic exploration by Werner F. Smith. The project came into being as a result of his growing obsession with analogue recording mediums, in particular cassette tapes and the use of cassette machines as instruments in their own right. The project uses tapeloops, field recordings, and FX pedals to create saturated landscapes with a nostalgic disposition. Werner is interested in the various states of consciousness facilitated by such sonic meditation and exploration.
‘Duifie’ is an experimental electro-acoustic music project by Rudi van Rensburg (Wolkberg; Havoc Vultures). The music is improvisational and explores a mixture of noise, dance and soundscapes through synthesizers.
