Sunday morning, coffee’s brewing, and End Hits is spinning on the turntable. This one always feels different.
Back in 1998, Fugazi returned to Inner Ear Studios in Arlington after a grueling world tour—and this time, they just slowed down. Seven months of recording, split up between tours, allowing things to breathe. Brendan Canty brought a Tascam 4-track to every practice, recording everything and filling tapes at home. Many of these songs came from those recordings, improvised moments later rediscovered and shaped into songs.
What really gets me are the studio experiments. “Closed Captioned” is built on a drum machine with live drums layered over, something they’d never tried before. “Floating Boy” ends with all drum mics removed except the bottom snare, buried in synth and reverb. Four guys in a room, surprising themselves.
And that title? Pure inside joke. The “end hits” are the drum hits Canty plays after the last track fades out—outtakes from the “No Surprise” sessions that somehow became the album’s name, and accidentally led half the punk scene to think Fugazi was breaking up. They weren’t.
This record took many people a long time to understand. It’s the experimentation that keeps me coming back. Give it a Sunday morning.

After 13 years, I got the axe in the latest layoffs at NBCUniversal. It has been a great run, starting as a senior software engineer and ending as a senior software engineer manager. I ran Fandango's streaming service, moved on to Peacock for a few years, and spent the past couple of years working with the NBC network brand apps. I have worked with some fantastic people and won an Emmy and many other awards. Now, I am at the start of finding the next step in my career.
