Meet Lil BUCK! This young pup is a 30-pound low-rider and so much fun. He’s back at the shelter from foster care (his foster took a short trip out of town) and BUCK is looking for his forever home. In foster care, BUCK was living well with another dog and kept his foster fam totally entertainer. He arrived at the shelter as a stray dog with an old leg injury. He deserves a good life with good people.

Foster fun with our foster dog MEMPHIS. This tall, dark, and handsome shelter dog has been a joy to have around. He has truly captured our hearts. When MEMPHIS was at the shelter, I often said that MEMPHIS may not be a dog for everyone but he has greatness in him. Many thought MEMPHIS might not do well living with other dogs and I don’t know anyone who thought he’d be good with small dogs. But here we are with MEMPHIS shining and thriving in a multi-dog household. He is an important reminder why we shouldn’t rush to judgment on dogs who may display unfavorable behavior while under stress from shelter life. What MEMPHIS needed and deserved was fair chance and a supportive home environment. There are so many dogs like MEMPHIS stuck in shelters who, without foster or rescue placement, may not make it out. If you can help a dog in need, please consider fostering for your local shelter.

Introducing PEONY. We were not surprised to learn that PEONY had a first approved adopter who adopted her as soon as her stray hold ended. We were, however, surprised and saddened to learn that PEONY was returned today for being “too old.” This adorable sweetheart came to the shelter as a stray senior dog. She is estimated to be around 13 years old. She likely needs dental care, may be hard of hearing, and may have cataracts. She is, however, very loving and deserving of someone who will give her the best life in her golden years.

I am so proud of our foster dog MEMPHIS. If you had met this dog in the shelter, he might have scared you. No one believed that he would be adopted from the shelter floor because he displayed significant kennel stress and reactivity. He was one of the most challenging dogs to walk and handle because he was beyond his threshold in that environment. Foster care allowed this good boy the opportunity to decompress, train, and shine. He has proven to be a completely different dog in a supportive home environment. House broken, crate trained, social with all our dogs (big and small). He is smart, soft, playful, obedient and freaking awesome! #fosteringsaveslives

Her story was nearly 2 & 1/2 years in the making but, after 870 days with the shelter, today SOPHIE found her happy home. ♥️ This morning we said our goodbyes but this special girl has my heart wherever she goes.
All dogs can teach us something but SOPHIE is a shining example of how we can get it wrong even though we are trying our best. For years, Sophia was considered an assertive, barrier reactive, on-leash reactive, dog selective, best as a solo pet, shelter dog. She presented poorly in the shelter - jumpy, mouthy, overly aroused. When I began fostering Sophie, I was not expecting such a drastic change in behavior. This was a dog who lacked confidence, was worried and cautious meeting other dogs, but incredibly eager to please (in fact desperate for approval and love). She is nothing like what she presented in the shelter environment and is 💯 pure love.
My dear Sophie, I miss you already and am grateful to your new dog dad for already sending me happy pupdates. You deserve the best this world has to offer and I am so proud of you my little truffle pig. 🥺😭🥰♥️

Turning frowns upside down, there’s nothing but positive vibes for our good boy JAKE. It’s been two years of waiting but, every day, JAKE is showered with love from staff and volunteers at DAS. So while we don’t celebrate the fact that JAKE has been here for two years, we do celebrate JAKE for being such a pawsome pooch pal. He’s waiting for his furever home and we’re all waiting to do a happy dance for him. Adopt JAKE! ♥️
JAKE came to Collier DAS on Feb 7, 2024. He is one of our longest shelter residents and one of many overlooked black dog shelter dogs. This sweet gray-faced fella is now approximately 8-9 years old and he’s 81 pounds of unconditional love. JAKE #A286053 is a volunteer favorite and deserves all the comforts of home life. JAKE suffers allergies which requires some management but he will pay you back with love and gratitude every day. Our good friends at @gulfcoasthumanesociety love JAKE so much that they have even offered to provide JAKE with cytopoint injections (as needed) for the rest of his life.
JAKE can be selective about his canine friends but has enjoyed compatible dog playmates. We do not know how JAKE is with cats. He does show any prey drive towards squirrel, critters or birds while on park walks. He enjoys pack walks with other dogs, rides well in a car, is house broken and well mannered in the home, and is a total love bug, cuddler and snuggle buddy. Come on folks, someone needs to give this good dog a good home.
