I was interviewed by Scott Sourdough Power for the NOT REAL ART podcast that he co-hosts with our mutual friend Alex Poli (an amazing artist also known as Man One). NOT REAL ART is a platform that celebrates artists and empowers their work with unique stories, podcasts, grants, experiences and more. I am proud of this episode and also very proud of the hard work by Scott and Alex. Please support them by visiting their website and signing up for the newsletter, sharing your stories, and following them online. This hasn’t happened since 1969. And somehow, we’re here to witness it. Day One of the Latinx Freedom Conference. More than 60 leaders from the 1960s civil rights movements—gathered again, carrying decades of history, struggle, memory, and vision into the same space. I came to support this important project … but what I’m leaving with is something much deeper. To sit in these rooms, to listen, to feel the weight and the continuity of it all—it’s powerful in a way that’s hard to describe. And then, to share it with friends and collaborators who showed up with care, intention, and love for the work—that’s the part I’ll hold onto. This is why this work matters. Day Two is tomorrow. Be in the room if you can. If not, join via livestream. 👉 Details at @latinxfreedomproject

The Chicano Camera Culture catalog is just out and Hyperallergic has named it as one of the 10 Art Books for Your Spring Reading. On behalf of the photographers and authors, I am thrilled for this recognition. Here is what Lakshmi Rivera Amin has to say: Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966 to 2026, edited by Elizabeth Ferrer | Riverside Art Museum and the University of Washington Press, March Countless images in this catalog are seared into my mind, leaving behind a layered indentation of five decades of Chicano photography in all its complexity. Coinciding with a two-venue exhibition of the same name at The Cheech and the Riverside Art Museum in California, Chicano Camera Culture is a palimpsestic ode to the photographers who documented Mexican-American diasporic identity and political movements, shaping them in turn. The late Rudy Rodriguez’s snapshot of Dolores Huerta speaking at a rally in 1974, in particular, stands as a testament to the women who molded Chicano political consciousness and to the artists who expanded its visual language. Special thanks to my fellow authors, @cvillasenorblack Jennifer Gonzalez @deannaledezma Nicole Scalissi, and @marytlikesart . Thanks to the folks at @thecheechcenter including Valerie Found, Sophia Esparza, Jen Kanter and @causeconnect . I am ever grateful to the @hlucefdn , which made such a handsome volume possible. A huge shout out to our wonderful graphic designer @philkovacevich . @thaliagochez , an immensely talented young photographer, provided the cover image for the book. And of course, eternal thanks to @cheechmarin for believing in this project and for his deep support of Chicano artists. The book is distributed by @uwapress and is the first publication to comprehensively examine the rich history of Chicano photography since the civil rights era. Gracias a todos.

My latest essay is now live on Substack. In “The Day I Gave a Painting Away,” I reflect on stewardship, collecting, and how art sometimes finds its way into museums through unexpected decisions. It begins with a simple truth: “Sometimes the most meaningful act is not acquiring art. Sometimes it is letting it go.” Read the full essay by visiting Substack or musedhouston.com. #Museings #ArtWorld #ArtCollections #ArtStewardship #Museums

A special day with my mom. 💛 One of her first outings in three months after fracturing her ribs—she’s finally feeling well enough to get out again. Today we attended a gathering for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino at Houston’s beautiful Julia Ideson Building. Send my mom some healing love! 💕

Eleven years ago today. Arts District in bloom. Pink trumpet trees. Brick and sky. Coffee at Daily Dose. As my beloved DTLA neighborhood began transforming, I photographed its formerly quiet streets daily — so I wouldn’t forget its spirit. This place was my muse. It cultivated lifelong friendships, transformed me into a photographer, and set me on a creative path devoted to supporting the arts. Nearly ten years in Houston now, but Downtown Los Angeles still blooms inside me today. Some cities shape you in ways you only understand years later. 🌸

My latest essay is now live on my Substack publication, “MUSE-ings: Notes from the Art World.” It was inspired by my experiences, both personal and professional, during the opening weekend of “Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966–2026” at The Cheech. Meeting photographers whose work is in the exhibition, and spending time in particular with artist Yulissa Mendoza’s work in the gallery, led me to reflect on why seeing art in person matters and on the often-invisible post-opening labor that sustains exhibitions over time. If you’re interested in what should happen after exhibitions open, I hope you’ll read. Link in bio or visit /p/after-the-opening

Speaking through music—la música como resistencia, memoria, y fuerza. This is our new original song “No Dejaremos.” Out now on all streaming platforms, full video on YouTube (link en bio). We’re honored to use a powerful photo by Luis C. Garza for the cover—he documented the movimiento in the 70s. Muchas gracias a todos! #cumbia #LAcumbia #loswachiwara #luisgarza #fyp

EXHIBITION AT THE CHEECH: I was honored to join Cheech Marin on KTLA Weekend Morning News to talk about “Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966–2026.” His generous words on air truly humbled me. Curated by Elizabeth Ferrer, the exhibition spans six decades of Chicano photography and brings together the work of nearly 50 photographers. I’m grateful to be included in this important and deeply meaningful presentation at The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum. The exhibition opens Saturday, February 7, and will be on view through September 6, 2026. Visit The Cheech. For the first time, an exhibition will span both locations of the Riverside Art Museum. “The Archive” — part of the “Chicano Camera Culture” exhibition — will displayed in RAM’s historic Julia Morgan Building through July 5.

I’ve launched a new Substack: MUSE-ings: Notes from the Art World — reflections on a life and career spent working in the arts, from Los Angeles to Houston and far beyond. This isn’t a promo feed or a calendar like my MUSED Houston. It’s a space for context, perspective, and the kind of thinking that happens between projects and after openings. 🔗 Link in bio The first full post is coming soon — for now, you can read the intro and About page to see what’s ahead. #MUSEings #ArtWorld #LifeInTheArts #ArtsWriting #CulturalWork
