Once more, we are turning to a title that finds its origin in Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley. While not his seminal fly fishing work, Rising Trout by Charles Fox is a fantastic addition to any angler’s library.
This is also an interesting example of where a reprint is of different value than a first edition. The 1978 second edition is expanded with some great, later writings of Fox.
Whether you fish Pennsylvania or are a student of the sport’s history, this title should be on your shelf.

Even though we all try to cram in anything and everything we might need for a day on the water, the truth is that we have to make some choices. Some flies are going to have to stay in the trunk. That extra spool just won’t fit. But there are some pieces of equipment that are small enough and light enough to fit into anyone’s pack.
And they’re the kinds of things that you’re better of having and not needing instead of needing and not having.
Today I talk about three of such pieces of fly fishing gear. They are going to go with me anytime I’m going to be far from my car. Why? They’re ability to turn a very bad situation around is worth the few ounces and square inches they demand.

Used bookstores are treasure troves for readers of fly fishing content. I don’t think I’ve ever been in an establishment that deals in previously owned books where there hasn’t been at least a row devoted to fly fishing. It is great for discovering hidden gems or taking a chance on a random title.
But if you have a particular book in mind, the internet gives you access to countless resellers. Today, I received a package in the mail. This is not unusual. In fact, enough book-shaped parcels come to my front step that I frequently am unsure as to what the contents of any given delivery might be.
Consequently, today’s video is an unboxing. I don’t know if these are “in” anymore online, but I figured I’d talk about how I find books in general and used books in particular.

If you’ve been fly fishing for over a decade, you’ve probably accumulated more than a couple gadgets and tools. They all work. Some work better than others. A few fit you and your fishing so well that they go with you everywhere you go fishing.
Today I share three pieces of gear that I’ve come to rely on for nearly all of my freshwater fly fishing.
Although we’re all different, the ergonomics, versatility, and prices of each of these items are probably in the range of what you’re looking for. So Check out my quick “show and tell,” click on the links below if you want more information, and fish with what helps you fish well.

Stories of the hunt have been told as long as we’ve been eating meat. Whether it be woolly mammoth or rainbow trout, everyone loves a good story.
Because they’re on the water so much, guides usually have a pretty robust back catalog of tales to tell. In Reelly and Reel Salty, Ryan Johnston compiles more stories than you could get through a weeks’ worth of nights around the camp fire. They’re both quick, fun reads that celebrate the love of the outdoors and the joy that comes with being outside with others.
Also, definitely check out the kids’ program that Johnston co-founded: @casthope

I am well aware that a lot of people have strong feelings about giant corporations. And it is not lost on me that among readers, Amazon gets mixed reviews. While I advocate for patronizing local bookstores and fly shops that carry books, hopping online and getting two day delivery not only meets a lot of people’s needs – it is their only option.
Regardless, it is interesting to see what the top five best selling fly fishing books on Amazon are at any given moment. Some are new and some are classics, And you’d be hard pressed to argue against any of the books that I share in this video. It is a good way to get a feel for what people are reading. It is also a great way to find a title or two to add to your shelf.

In the April/May issue, I have two articles; one being a book review. The other is essentially a comprehensive “here are your best options” guide for picking a small stream fly rod. I get the any-rod-will-do sentiment that a lot of anglers take for mountain stream angling. But if that is your preferred type of fishing, then it is certainly worth it to think through what the best tool for the job might be.
Anthologies of fly fishing writing are not uncommon. With enough time, the public domain presents a vast array of content to choose from. Consequently, there is a variety of quality on bookshelves.
One example of a great collection of fly fishing writing, however, comes in the form of Tight Lines: Ten Years of the Yale Anglers’ Journal. This now-defunct university magazine burned bright for the decade it was around. Not only did it feature student and faculty contributions, but prominent anglers from all over could be found in its pages.
This title is easily found used, and should seriously be considered for the caliber and breadth of writing it contains.

There are a handful of very valid reasons why you wouldn’t use this book.
At the same time, if you did happen to have it on your shelf it could be valuable to you.
How could both be true? Well, Mark Williams’ Trout Fishing Sourcebook is absolutely chock-full of information. In fact, it might be the most comprehensive trout angling publication in recent history. Of course, it was written in 1996. And therein lies the rub.

Print media? In this day and age?
Of course. If it is worth reading, why not? And Dark Skies Fly Fishing is a magazine that is certainly worth reading.
Although the magazine primarily covers the Mid Atlantic region, this publication would be well received by anyone interested in a wide range of fly fishing topics. Each month there are diverse articles covering everything from destinations to fly patterns, techniques to interviews.
What’s more, the entire magazine is available digitally. You can click on the current issue or the back catalog to your heart’s content!

The silence couples with the topography to create disorienting discrepancies. The nothingness surrounds so as to foment a claustrophobic impulse. The direction of the sounds that do crack out, a falling branch or a rock sent skittering by an unseen creature, are nearly impossible to pinpoint. It is a broad daylight unease that only goes away with time. Or, what accomplishes this more quickly, a turn of attention to finding fish.
