I had the great pleasure last week of joining fellow AMPS Members Kate Davis, Andrew Sissons and Simon Bishop, to talk about some of our on set experiences, in a panel discussion, Sound on Set - capturing the perfect take, at the Media Production Show at the Olympia Grand Hall.

Tish Murtha was a phenomenal documentary photographer, overlooked in her lifetime, who dedicated herself to documenting her community in the natural light of their time from the 1970’s till her death in 2013. Tish revealed the humanity that is so often brutally marginalised by political and economic deprivation and her devotion to her work was uncompromsing.
Ella Murtha, Tish’s only child, works equally hard to keep Tish’s portfolio of work present for us all to learn from and together with film makers Paul Sng, Jennifer Corcoran and Holly Galloway, Ella has created a very moving portrait of Tish Murtha’s life and works. I feel so lucky to have been involved in helping Ella tell that story.

Main characters Lisa and Danny were spending time together via FaceTime from separate locations for 98% of the story. When their respective characters were off screen, actors Antonia Thomas (@althomas1 ) and Craig Roberts (craigroberts10)needed to deliver their side of the scene away from set. They needed every opportunity to support each other with full performance which included naturally overlapping their lines and all on screen performances needed to be free of overlaps for creative control in the edit.
Thanks to the support from Director John Addis and Producers Arabella McGuigan and Stephen Abrahams we were able to maximise pre-production to create and test a handful of technical workflows that could be adapted for each of the 40 something locations we navigated before we hit the studio.
The nature of the sound department’s workflow with cast needed to be understood by all departments before we hit the first day of production. We started our testing and show and tells early in pre-production to get that buy in and the efficiency on the floor when shooting was a product of that prep.
All the depts were well versed in Earwigs, our rugged relay station and the multiple versions of the mobile voice over booth. Dream team all round!

I’ve had a preview and it is filled to the brim with lavishly crafted noises from The Sonic Catering Band, unforgettable variations of theme from Heather Trost and Jeremy Barnes (check out A Hawk And A Hacksaw if you haven’t already) and more plus outtakes!
The limited release of double vinyl with satisfyingly detailed liner notes, cassette tape and the usual digital streaming/download is available to pre-order now and in the meantime you can get a hint of that theme and noises from the preview tracks available now!
