Today, Next of Kin is officially out in the world and I couldn’t be prouder to share it with you.
The build up to getting this book out has felt like climbing a mountain. A literal, metaphorical, emotional mountain. And today, I’m standing at the top - doubled over, heaving.
I’ve got big visions for this book. I picture readers across the country holding it close, bringing it to the table, and allowing it to start big conversations. I see them laughing and crying and highlighting bits, and gifting a copy to people who need it.
My hope is that it makes them feel like they can tackle anything that comes their way, and that it emboldens more people to step up as Next of Kin if they have the chance and the capacity. And, that it gives them precious time with their people they’ll never get back.

Health is a tool to buy you more time with the people you love, and to find out why you’re here.
If you’re going to put time in to your health, you want to be sure you’re getting a return on your investment.
This big, US-based study (122,000+ people) found life expectancy at 50 can ⬆️ by 14 years for women and 12.2 years for men if you do these 5 things…
1️⃣ 30 mins or more a day of moderate to vigorous exercise
2️⃣ Not smoking or vaping (or giving up as young as possible)
3️⃣ Having a decent diet, specifically less processed foods and more fruits and vegetables
4️⃣ Maintaining a healthy weight
5️⃣ Low or no alcohol consumption
Nothing groundbreaking, just the same old basics you already know. But if you want another 12-14 years of life, these have been proven again and again to deliver.
Save this as your reminder to keep it simple, when the health noise gets overwhelming 👋🏾

Feels kind of surreal (and a bit silly) to share this sort of thing given the state of the world RN… but I just wanted to say thank you. 30,000+ people are here now and it means more than you could ever know.
To me, this is so much more than an account. It’s a community, where we cheer each other on on the hard days and celebrate the little wins along the way. I try to show up in my full humanity and make navigating the obstacle course of life a little easier. I’d cared for Dad so intensely I’d forgotten how to take care of myself.
When we said goodbye and I had all that time back, I didn’t know what to do with it. Simply getting dressed felt like an enormous task beyond my reach.
But slowly I have come back to life, and now I know that all he would want is to know I’m taking care of myself and the people he loved most. That is the best way to honour him. So I do, gently, gently. Moving my body, giving myself compassion, and treating myself how my Dad treated me - like I am precious.

This is an unpopular truth, but your medical results are your responsibility. Yes, your doctor should communicate them to you. Yes, you should be able to trust the communications you receive, automated or otherwise. But the onus isn’t on them, it’s on you.
Sometimes that means you have to follow up, ask for more information, and push. It’s time consuming and annoying and also our responsibility as patients and partners in care 🫶🏾

Full disclosure I actually bought the d3 by accident but then heard about it on a million podcasts and thought I’d give it a go 🙄 most of us shouldn’t need to supplement with vitamin D in Aus (we get it from 🌞 and 🥗) and shouldn’t really be supplementing with anything much unless we’ve tested as deficient or are in a high risk group. That’s what the experts and evidence say anyway (don’t shoot the messenger).
Anyway… a friendly reminder that if you have a health question and need support you can chat to a nurse 24/7 via Health Direct on 1800 022 222.
It’s a wonderful (free) resource for those times you’d like to avoid the ED but aren’t sure what to do (or when you do something silly like I did) 🫢
