We’re just two days away from our premier event!
Next up in our founder spotlight is Cindy and Casey Ball of the Desert Empire Filmmaker Foundation. @desertempirefilmmaker
Cindy and Casey are building something the Inland Empire has never had: a film ecosystem where local creatives can learn, work, and succeed without having to leave their community. Through the Desert Empire Filmmaker Foundation, they provide the resources, training, and mentorship that filmmakers in the region have long been missing.
What drives them is a belief that the Inland Empire’s stories matter. The region is rich with culture, resilience, and identity, and DEFF exists to make sure those stories get told.
On April 25, they bring that mission to the stage at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

🎥🍿 Cindy & Casey Ball’s Desert Empire Filmmaker Foundation (DEFF) is betting big on the IE—aiming to make it the “Hollywood of indie film.” They tout built-in advantages LA can’t match: diverse landscapes from Big Bear to Joshua Tree, community venues eager to host, lower costs/fewer gatekeepers, and a faster path from idea to screen.
They’re also pushing equity—Casey flagged a public-arts funding gap of about $3 per capita statewide vs. about $0.40 in San Bernardino County—and building practical support via hands-on production and marketing assistance, on-set IMDb credits, workshops/mixers, a podcast, and more.
With fiscal sponsorship from @artsconnection_network (the county arts council), DEFF operates under an established 501(c)(3) while finalizing its own status—unlocking partnerships and resources for local filmmakers. Read the full story at our link in bio or IECN.com. 🔗📲

Pitch Day for @caravanseraiproject was a success! We pitched Desert Empire Filmmaker to an audience supporting entrepreneurs local to the Inland Empire. We made sure to advocate for what IE filmmakers really need, a creative ecosystem that breeds high quality productions outside of Hollywood studios.
For the past 8 months, @producedbycindy has been working behind the scenes with this organization to help strengthen the inside working of our non-profit. Now, we’re ready to continue building the community of filmmakers in the Inland Empire!
Thank you Franzene, Bradley, and the rest of the Caravanserai Team for your support and your continued dedication to the community!
We’re excited for the upcoming DEFF season as we have more events and opportunities for you all!

New Ghost In The Shell series coming in July, the art style is more in line with Shirow Masamune’s original design and look in the manga. Which makes me think the new anime will also follow the writing and feel of the manga, which I think would be a welcome change of pace. For reference, GITS and GITS 2: Innocence are very slow-burn philosophical type films, and the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex series are a very good police procedural/detective type show, and I think Science Saru has a good chance to do something fresh with the franchise.

A young father is forced to choose between his lifelong collection of musical gear or sacrificing it to make ends meet for his family, in RAM’S HEAD.
Watch now as part of the Mometu Short Film Showdown.
I don’t think there’s another platform out there aside from @freemometu that’s giving independent short filmmakers the chance to get in front of an audience like this. Aside from that I like their anti AI algorithm ethos and available content. David Lean’s A Brief Encounter AND Jackie Chan in 36 Crazy Fists? Cmon, now.
