@CHICAGOSUNTIMES — A featured artist at Expo Chicago, Helina Metaferia attested to the impact of the Black Collectors Guild. Black women members from the group purchased two of her sculptures, a wood and brass staff and brass crown. They also donated the latter to be included in the permanent collection of a prominent museum, which will announce the acquisition later this spring. The pieces are displayed by Superposition Gallery, owned by New York resident Storm Ascher. “My work upholds the legacies and histories of women of color, particularly Black women,” said Metaferia, an Ethiopian American artist and New Yorker. “To be supported by a Black woman gallerist, Black women collectors and then to make sure that [work] gets to be in the museum feels so empowering,” she said. “It’s beyond what I could have dreamed of on my own.” ✍🏽 @miss_ethompson 📸 @candace.dane

New for @washingtonpost Measuring pain, one of the most fundamental tasks in medicine, remains one of the least precise — a shortcoming that studies show has led the medical community to consistently underestimate the pain of women and minorities, especially Black Americans.  Researchers like Dr. Julia Finkel at Children’s National Hospital are now on a quest to find objective biological indicators of pain that will enable doctors to quantify it as they do heart rate and blood pressure. Dr. Finkel received an $8 million federal grant to develop the first device to determine both the type and intensity of pain using biomarkers. Clinical trials for the tool, dubbed the Nociometer, are set to begin soon with hopes that an approved device will be ready for clinical use within five years.

Principle over party. This week, I’m thinking of portraits I made for @readhammerandhope . Last January, Tariq Habash resigned from his policy advisory position in the Department of Education. Four months later, Lily Greenberg Call also resigned from her federal position at the Department of the Interior in protest of the Biden administration’s position on Gaza. My first @nytimes byline published on Thanksgiving day and featured in print as the Sunday Edition Arts & Leisure cover story! Back in August, I traveled with writer Patti Leigh Brown through the Sea Islands into Gullah Geechee land to report on historic praise houses and the folks who are working to preserve their legacy. Pictured here are Rev. Kay Colleton and artist Charmaine Minniefield — two champions of the places of worship that served as safe havens for enslaved people and their descendants. A big thank you to @allypix77 for trusting me with this beautiful story! Full article linked in bio.
