Time for a wander with some of the cohort from @rcaied to kick off project work, with the help of our Augmented Reality field guide and @carolina_ramirezfigueroa and Gian Luca Amadei.  As part of the explorations for the Future Interspecies Entanglements + Future Cities design field collectives at the Royal College of Art, we went into the field to consider time and temporalities. Stepping out into the field helps us to think convergently and away from our laptops in the studios – this is sketching through moving and talking. We had loose discussions around what we mean by time, framed through a series of sites in an important historic location around provocations including: Historical Narratives; Evolution and Change; Retro and Future; Memory and Nostalgia. #xr #augmentedreality #rca #history #ar

I recently led a project with 30 Information Experience Design MA students from the RCA, that focused on XR and the built environment. I wasn’t quite expecting the sheer *range* of responses, and that’s heartening! Their responses weren’t the normal hyperreal 3D pinned to the world that we often see in promos; haptics, audio and lo-fi visual displays all made an appearance, for example. Thanks for the invite, @carolina_ramirezfigueroa and @rcaied ! The brief: Investigate and demonstrate how Extended Reality (VR or AR) might affect the way we experience our immediate environments, whether those environments are familiar or unfamiliar. Students were given six key locations across the City of London to anchor their work. Through a series of workshops spanning five weeks, we investigated how projected audio-visual information might serve the user, through the lens of the everyday and the built environment around us. Truly ubiquitous Augmented Reality hasn’t arrived yet, making this an ideal emergent technology to adopt a forward-thinking 'what-if' stance. The workshop started in the studio, where we looked at different research design methodologies to go broad, thinking outside how conventional media currently portrays a future state of AR. We then sharpened and framed a design proposition, created artefacts, and journeyed out into the field to present back the students’ design provocations at the sites they had been tuned for.
