“PROOF” by Cam Hicks, my second monograph.
In 2018, I sent Virgil the message “I want to work with you at Louis Vuitton” and he replied with a chess move — come to Paris and I’ll leave the door open. My first time ever in Europe, I got the opportunity to not only witness that first season at LV, but document the days leading up to that moment of history.
Once I developed all the photographs, I knew what I captured deserved a more tangible representation than the digital world could provide. I produced two copies of a monograph titled “PROOF” — proof that V held the door open, proof of my witness and opportunity to soak up knowledge, and proof that he was the first black man to lead the house.
After 8 years in the archives, I’m now giving this new version to the world, releasing as high resolution flatbed scans of the original editions — featuring over 500 photos and a written introductory foreword highlighting Virgil Abloh’s first season as artistic director of Louis Vuitton.
