We had an excellent visit last Friday from our Advisory Council members who were here for desk crits and studio pin-ups, plus hosting a resume/portfolio workshop and gallery-style presentation of their own projects.
The evening was spent celebrating the council's 25th Anniversary, honoring four of the five founding members - Martin Flores, Vicky Estrada, Jim Taylor, and Mark Lorge - as well as Emeritus Professor and past CAED Associate Dean Dick Zweifel, and current Department Head Beverly Bass (who will be retiring after this year).

This quarter, Ryan Sandwick’s LA 402 Theory Studio is working in Fresno to reimagine 16 acres near Fresno City College—land cleared for a major infrastructure project—as the city’s first university district.
Last Friday, the studio traveled to Fresno for an overnight visit, kicking off the project with a first round of community engagement to hear local perspectives on goals/visioning, housing, transportation, and public space. The following morning, the team explored the campus and surrounding study area on a guided walking tour to better understand existing and future conditions.
This externally funded studio will continue developing ideas with our second overnight visit on May 15, where we'll share our conceptual designs, and will culminate in a master plan with four design proposals grounded in the needs, desires, and preferred aesthetics of the local community.
Our projects are out for delivery, arriving June 6, 2026 to Cal Poly’s Berg Gallery 📦🚛💨
We have been hard at work to ensure expedited shipping just for you 😏
Any donations to our show would be greatly appreciated. GoFundMe link in the bio 🤲💰🙏
Stay tuned for our show theme debuting next week 😉
We have four teams of intrepid students participating in Design Village, this year! In the first week, they've already done a site assessment, anthropomorphic studies, and made concept models. Professor César Torres Bustamante is leading this independent study course, and we look forward to the event in Poly Canyon, April 24-26. 😎
Cheers to Sophia Giordano for her beautiful work on this pollinator mural for Templeton Hills Community Farm! Before painting the final design, Sophia reached out to Landscape Architecture faculty Kim Chacon for support with a layout scheme and conceptual illustration based around plants at the site; and she integrated the client's requests to include people, a farm sign banner, and a bee wing-span photo op. We hope to see more community projects like this 😍🐝
