We are pleased to include Caleb Allison’s Sol Folium (2024) in this year’s festival! 🍁
Sol Folium is a structural camera-roll film exploring the impressionistic abilities of the Bolex H-16 to translate and express the grace of the fall season into a dizzying mosaic of movement, emotion, color, and memory. Shot entirely in-camera on a 100’ roll of Kodak’s 16mm Ektachrome, the film was a self-conscious challenge to slow down, exist in the present, and appreciate the simple beauty of our natural world.
Caleb Allison is a passionate scholar-practitioner and moving image archivist at Butler University whose filmmaking explores the material histories and embodied practices of small gauge film formats. He’s taught celluloid-based and experimental filmmaking techniques alongside cinema and media studies courses for nearly a decade and has screened his work both locally and internationally. His most recent venture is the founding of Sprocket & Reel, a company whose mission it is to spread the joys of analogue filmmaking by hosting accessible 2-day 16mm workshops with diverse communities. His next film project, Light Sculpture in Time: Nathaniel Dorsky’s Devotional Cinema, is a commissioned video essay using archival footage from the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive’s vast educational film collection that serves as a visual companion to Devotional Cinema, a philosophical monograph by prominent experimental filmmaker, Nathaniel Dorsky.

Winding through a gorgeous print of the 2000 director’s cut of The Exorcist @iulmovingimagearchive . What a treat - it’s even more terrifying frame by frame. Hopefully this one makes it up on the big screen sometime soon!
For the film nerds - this one has multiple soundtracks: Dolby SR-D (between the perfs), Sony Dynamic Digital Sound - SDDS (frame edges) ; High Magenta Variable Area Dual Bi-lateral Optical Track (wavy lines), and DTS Timecode (dashes next to optical track) It’s packed!

My new experimental film, ‘Sol Folim,’ will premiere at @iucinema on Thursday Feb. 20 at 7PM (and again on Sat. at 4pm) and precede Wim Wenders’ subtle masterpiece, ‘Perfect Days.’
‘Sol Folim’ explores the impressionistic abilities of the Bolex H16 to translate and express the grace of the fall season into a dizzying mosaic of movement, emotion, color, and memory. Shot entirely in-camera on a 100’ roll of @kodak Ektachrome 16mm, the film was a self-conscious challenge to slow down, exist in the present, and appreciate the simple beauty of our natural world.

Really excited to share my recent interview with the very generous Jon Vickers @s.m.a.r.t.bus and the wonderful team at @canopybloomington on my new 16mm experimental film, ‘Sol Folium.’ Trees are awesome, especially on film! Link in bio.
Stand by for screening updates!

Eagerly waiting on this roll to come back and reminding myself those IN colors feel so special because they’re only with us for a moment - a great exercise in patience and appreciation - this is the power of film.
My intention was to capture the fleeting magnificence of those colors by way of the limited and limitless possibilities of the Bolex and a Vario Switar 18-86mm zoom lens. 🎥 🍁

Things got a little wild at the camera-less filmmaking workshop last night, put on by @iulmovingimagearchive and generously hosted by @iucollects ! We scratched, hole-punched, painted, wrote, and otherwise destroyed some perfectly fine leader in the name of art.
It’s 4/20 and that means it’s time to… screen a new 2K restoration of the cult classic ‘Reefer Madness’ at @iucinema at 4PM! Special introduction by @jbonrox .
One of the greatest cult films of all time, ‘Reefer Madness’ theatrically dramatizes the sensational dangers of the most frightful assassin of our youth, Public Enemy No. 1: marijuana! Originally produced as ‘Tell Your Children,’ the film serves as a riotous cautionary tale when one decides to tangle with the Demon Weed. Moral corruption, emotional disturbances, unstoppable laughter, murder, even insanity—these are just some of the dire consequences of a group of high school friends lured into the dark world of cannabis!
