Tiong Bahru Bakery in Tampines 1.
Having evolved from a remote village, once known for its abundance of Tempinis trees to an internationally, award-winning residential town in 1991, Tampines is Singapore’s most well connected regional centre. It has since matured into a vibrant district with a strong commercial and community presence.
While design references for this store ideate from scenes of the old village and the township’s formative years, it is balanced with a focus on creating an elevated cafe dining experience.
Wherever possible, solid timber and natural wood veneer were chosen over simulated wood.
These were used extensively to envelope all the wall lined area to achieve depth, texture and warmth.
Several familiar objects and forms were adapted and reinterpreted within the space.
These include customised light fixtures, decorative elevation treatment and carefully considered out-door dining demarcation - subtle yet deliberate details that connect the store to it’s context and brand identity.
