We're so excited to share our latest art project, circa•luna. 36 LaserDiscs. 24 custom circuit boards. 72 motors. 1 Raspberry Pi. Its mesmerizing movements are influenced by the phases of the moon, creating a unique experience depending on when you visit.
Spearheaded by
@strangehandle with heavy collaboration by
@calebmcl , it’s a permanent kinetic installation at The Pinnacle venue in Nashville and it’s the biggest and most complicated thing we’ve ever worked on. We spent the majority of the last two months learning, planning, designing and building this piece with very important assists from
@colinalthaus and Geoffrey Gill.
Jason (
@strangehandle ) lead the team of artists and wore many hats, most notably concept, electrical design and custom code. His code not only made it possible for all 72 motors to move in complicated synchronized patterns but also for the piece to be reactive to the moon phases.
@calebmcl handled mechanical design and parts of the fabrication process including 3d printing, laser cutting and CNC work.
@colinalthaus helped design the custom PCBs (printed circuit boards) we used. Given the very tight timeline we only had one chance to get the design right and Colin pulled through.
Geoffrey Gill designed the structure that houses the entire system. Without his help we would have ended up with some kind of haphazard creation that did not do the core of our installation justice.
We're grateful too for the many friends who helped with assembling parts, painting the structure, filming bts and being supportive in so many other ways.
Alas, we can’t bring my friends to see it in person unless we’re going to an event at
@thepinnaclenashville (which we'd love to do) so please enjoy this video. Looking forward to sharing more!
