I’m happy to announce that my artwork ‘The Call of Connectivity’ (2024) was selected for first prize in the ‘Best Undergraduate Entry’ for @uq_psych 2024 Psychology as Art competition. This may be one of my favourite pieces from 2024!
This piece was created using pencil on paper, inspired by the course PSYC3262: Evolutionary Approaches to Human Behaviour. It features a human face integrated with imagery of neural pathways, alongside the silhouettes of two figures, symbolising our unique ability to connect our minds.
I found this course particularly intriguing, especially the concepts of humankind’s innate ‘urge to connect our minds’ and ‘nested scenario building.’ Unlike other animals, humans can perspective-take, imagine fictional scenarios, and consider morality in decision-making. Our strong desire to collaborate and use our minds for the collective development of our species is a fascinating aspect of our evolution.

This was the biggest self-portrait, biggest painting & first painting I’ve exhibited, which was exciting. I don’t own an easel either so I stupidly painted the whole portrait holding the canvas up with one hand and painting with the other (ouchie)
Throughout the past few years I’ve found a profound sense of comfort and freedom in altering my appearance. This exploration, primarily through cosplaying and makeup experimentation, has allowed me to navigate the complex interplay between how I am perceived by others and how I wish to be seen. ‘To be Perceived’ explores the disconnect between identity and perception, highlighting the struggle many face in aligning their true selves with external expectations.
