Join us in 2025/ link in bio … Seven seconds of pure wild. This is how fast and has agile humpbacks can be. Chasing dolphins and being able to keep up is no easy feat, yet we watched 5 whales doing just that for hours. This action was likely also mixed with some dominance displays for a female so the interplay between the whales fighting each other while also playing with dolphins was incredibly interesting.
It does however start to make us question the energy conservation needs when they migrate to the tropics for their winter. If they can burn this sort of energy, how much in the tank do they really have? Did evolution favour those with more energy to burn when they were away from their feeding grounds? This building more powerful and stronger individuals who could last longer?
What do you think?

SOUND ON// Mellon headed whales finding some joy along side their larger cousins the humpbacks whales. This was a first for me and our crew. Mellon headed whales are usually sited near the islands further west and well offshore, sitings near us are very uncommon. Moreover, having them swimming with these gentle giants was definitely an incredibly rare moment.
We got to watch this pairing for a good couple of hours (mostly from the surface) but a few times they were predictable enough that we could jump in. Surprisingly when the whales weren’t close the Mellon headed whales kept greeter distance. But when they were directly associated with the humpbacks they didn’t mind coming closer with them. Like they had their bodyguards!
I have seen this before with Pygmy killer whales and sperm whales. There’s a post further down. When the sperm whale was near us the Pygmy killer whales would be close to, but on their own the Pygmy killer whales kept their distance.
The world of whales is a massive book and we’ve barely turned the pages of the first chapter.

There are so many humpback whale images taken by so many talented photographers across the world, it's inspiring to see all the magic being witnessed. but sometimes I feel like it's hard to share when the bar is so high.
Nonetheless when I'm out there I get excited when movements happen that I feel haven't been photographed or perhaps just not shared as much. Especially when video formats seem to dominate which are also cool.
But here a few images that I feel have an interesting shift in perspective or are moments less seen.
I do have a couple more that didn't make it here.
Comment "wild" and I'll send a couple more your way.

A small piece of time but an immeasurable mark in my timeline.
We never know when a whale will engage or if it ever will, but when you give it the right conditions on their terms you're stacking the odds towards your mind being blown.

Once every few years an individual imprints its presence into your mind. This individual can sometimes be from another species.
This whale, a surprise moment on an otherwise normal and beautiful day in the South Pacific graced us with their time. Even though this moment lasted a couple of hours. I believe that even if it was just 30 seconds I'd still be thinking about this whale four years later. Why? I'm not sure. But it's like our closest friends. We don't know exactly why they are, and if we could answer it then the magic would be gone.
I'm incredibly lucky to see so many amazing animals across this beautiful planet and share their stories. Animals that stay with you, because you shared time together. And this is what we need more of- shared time together. As humans and with our animal counterparts.
Share some time with some being.
Was stoked to share this @vinny_lab !

We've been running expeditions to a remote corner of French Polynesia for five years. Almost no one else goes there. That's the point.
When there are no other boats, the whales behave differently. Calm. Curious. Unhurried. In-water observations that can last hours.
We run 5 weeks every September and October. One session is already sold out.
Updated availability- >
* Session 1: September 13–20 — 3 spots -> 1 spot
* Session 2: September 20–27 — 2 spots ->SOLD OUT
* Session 3: September 27–October 4 - 1 spot
* Session 4: October 4–11 — 2 spots - SOLD OUT

Some places are remote because they're hard to reach. Tubuai is worth every hour of travel.

The largest animal that has ever lived on this planet is still out there. And you can swim with it.
Every November we run a small group expedition to Timor-Leste — one of the most remote and least visited stretches of ocean on earth — to swim with blue whales in the wild. No SCUBA required. Groups of just 3-4 people in the water at a time. Five days on the ocean.
We've been running these expeditions since 2019. Two of our four November sessions are already sold out.
Sessions 3 and 4 are open — November 15-21 and November 22-28, 2026.

SWIPE THROUGH// Clear water and wide angles make for some of my favorite whale photography. While of course it's incredible when they come close, I find a greater sense of their grandeur and my insignificance when the scene is open and immense.
It's hard to capture as the water needs to be clear but when it all aligns I often prefer these moments from afar.
