The Hollyhock House, a stunning masterpiece of Mayan Revival architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright, holds a secret that few know about. The house was actually designed as a cultural center for Barnsdall’s avant-garde theater company, and there are whispers of a forbidden romance between her and Wright.
After Aline Barnsdall got rid of the Hollyhock House, it served as a residence for a number of private owners and was even used as a social club for a time. However, the house ultimately fell into a period of neglect and decay. The house was eventually donated to the city of Los Angeles, which restored and reopened it as a public museum in 2015. Today, visitors can experience the beauty and scandalous history of the Hollyhock House for themselves, as they explore one of the most iconic buildings in the world and the only UNESCO protected building in LA.

With global tensions rising, I felt I had no choice but to enlist in the 65th Infantry Regiment: “The Borinqueneers”
The regiment is still alive!
The 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the “Borinqueneers,” is a historic unit of the United States Army made up primarily of Puerto Rican soldiers. Established in 1899, the regiment went on to serve with distinction in both World War I and World War II, but it became especially renowned for its bravery during the Korean War. Facing harsh conditions and intense combat, the Borinqueneers earned numerous honors and proved their resilience despite language barriers and discrimination. In 2014, their legacy was formally recognized when they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, honoring their courage, sacrifice, and lasting impact on U.S. military history. My great-grandfather was one of those soldiers, he served in a battalion of the 65th, and his story lives on through all of us.
