#InFocus: “In Focus” is a series of reviews in which we hunt down and peruse our favourite publications off the shelves of our community artists. This month, we spotlight “Dead End” by Nicola Moscelli (@nicolamoscelli ), and “The Lines We Draw” by Lavinia Parlamenti (@i_say_lav ) and Manfredi Pantanella (@man_fredi_p ). Both photobooks explore how borders and identity are perceived - Moscelli with his meticulous, research-driven approach, Parlamenti and Pantanella through surreal, dreamlike landscapes. Both books invite the readers to navigate the works in autonomy, resisting rigid interpretations and recasting the very notion of the border into something less linear. 🔗 Read the full article by Carolina Semprucci (@cachius ) on dergreif.org. The Act of Becoming by Carolina Semprucci This issue features the first piece by one of our 2025 writers in residence, @cachius , where she explores the work of this year’s winners. Carolina reflects on how photography serves as a tool for reconstructing memory, challenging dominant narratives, and creating space for new ways of seeing–and being seen–as an emerging artist today. “These works reflect on how the self inhabits, performs, or resists inherited structures of power: within patriarchy, colonialism, capitalism, family, society, and media systems. Focusing on agency rather than inevitability, the act of image-making is used to reconstruct meaning, suggesting that, perhaps, legacy is not a verdict, but a narrative we’re allowed to reinterpret.” Read the full essay on our website.

#InFocus: “In Focus” is Der Greif’s photobook review series, spotlights our picks from the current open call for submissions and our community artists most recent publications. This month, we bring out of our selection “Mit Euren Spuren”, a book published by DISTANZ Verlag (@distanverlag ) and an interdisciplinary photography project that brings together six photographers from Munich with eight LGBTQIA+ seniors. Over the course of a year, Munich-based photographers and creatives Teo Apostolescu (@fotosaurus_ ), Mara Fischer (@mararakete ), Francesco Giordano (@francescogiordano._ ), Joseph Wolfgang Ohlert (@jwog_studio ), Florian Tenk (@floriantenk ) and Stella Deborah Traub (@stelladeborahtraub ) documented their encounters through photographs, texts, and the artistic processing of archival materials to learn from the achievements of previous generations and to make the queer heritage visible. 🔗 Read the full article by Carolina Semprucci (@cachius ) on: /article/in-focus-mit-euren-spuren. #photobooks #InFocus #DerGreifMagazine #ArtistBooks

Dummy for We Will Not Be Stopped - a project archiving American propaganda and tracking ICE. The book features a series of high resolution scans of social media posts published by US government agencies since the return of the Trump administration. Its middle section hides code that can be used to create an app that tracks ICE agents. Instructions (and research) can be found inside the booklet on the front cover. Design by @cachius

#GreifAlumni: We are incredibly proud to follow the evolving journeys of our alumni. Currently, the exhibition “Community: Photography and Belonging” at Kunstpalast Düsseldorf (@kunstpalast ) features the compelling work of three Greif Alumni: Lilly Lulay (@lillylulay ), Marcel Top (@marceltoptop ), and Amin Yousefi (@aminyosefi ). Curated by Linda Conze (@_lindamary_ ) and Miriam Homer (@miriandam ), this show dives deep into how photography constructs our sense of belonging, moving beyond simple documentation to interrogate the power dynamics between the photographer, the subject, and the viewer. From Lulay’s exploration of algorithmic social networks and Top’s subversion of AI surveillance to Yousefi’s powerful reclamation of archival revolutionary history, these artists challenge us to look closer at who is included, and who is left out of the frame. Their participation in this major exhibition, running until May 25, exemplifies the critical inquiry and artistic excellence we strive to foster. We are honored to watch our former students continue to ask the urgent questions: how much of what we see is real, and how much have we been guided to feel? 🔗 Read the full article by Carolina Semprucci (@cachius ) on dergreif.org. It feels genuinely special to return to my university for such an incredible event celebrating everyday photography. I had the pleasure of speaking with @laurahavlin and @cachius about their essays for @photoworks_uk ’s Photography+, which made it even more meaningful. And what a joy to share it with our brilliant collaborators @eidolon_centre and @uow_cream .

#InFocus: “In Focus” is Der Greif’s photobook review series, spotlights our picks from the current open call for submissions and our community artists most recent publications. This month, we’re presenting “Colour Theory” by Max Pinckers (@maxpinckers ) and Victoria Gonzalez-Figueras (@victoriagonzalezfigueras ), and “Violent Images” edited by Eva Leitolf (@leitolf ) and Giulia Cordin (@giuliacordin ), books that subvert contemporary mechanisms of image consumption. By analysing how meaning is fabricated through cycles of visual circulation, reiteration, repetition, and, finally, normalization, both photobooks seek to disrupt these patterns. 🔗 Read the full article by Carolina Semprucci (@cachius ) on dergreif.org.
