Shadow On The Sun “Men cannot change if there’s no blueprint to change Men cannot love if they aren’t taught the art of loving It is not true that men are unwilling to change It is true that they are afraid to change.” -Bell Hooks Shadow on the Sun is a dance performance exploring masculinity and its impact on men’s emotional lives. Through dance, story, and ritual, the work traces the emotional impact of growing up in a culture that teaches men to harden, compete, disconnect, and hide the parts of themselves that ache to be seen. The work examines four pillars of boys’ emotional development: - Family lineage - Partnership and Intimacy - Friendship and Brotherhood - Selfhood and Identity. The series reveals the quiet wounds men carry and the ways these wounds shape their relationships, identities, and inner worlds. Drawing from interviews with boys and men, academic research, and lived experience, each performance becomes a somatic archive: a place where suppressed stories return to the body and transform into movement. CHAPTER 1: BROTHERHOOD This chapter focuses on friendship & the practice it takes to maintain a real connection. It explores how trust, accountability, & support are built and a practice is developed over time — through action & shared experience. At the center of the work are the nonnegotiable ingredients of love: care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust. The piece explores how these are built through action—how we learn to support one another, stay present, and grow together over time. Rather than telling a story, the work offers a window into that practice. It invites the audience to witness what it takes to build and sustain meaningful connections. Personally, I’ve lost a lot of people I’ve considered brothers in these last few years so this work hits heavy on my heart as we work to heal. Improved Emotional Health: Regular practice can lead to a more positive mood, better self-image, and increased optimism. Increased Self-Awareness: It helps individuals understand their thought patterns, fostering personal growth and self-discipline. Key Physical Health Benefits Better Sleep: By relaxing the mind and releasing tension, meditation helps reduce insomnia and improves sleep quality.
