Art direction, illustration & animation for the
@spoiledsuede project OUT OF BOUNDS back in 2022
⏩️ Swipe for details cuz there are a ton and check out some rambling loosely related to the artwork below.
E gave me a list of influences he had written down while making the album but the one that stood out most was “Brooklyn before the bike lanes”. I don’t think I ever spent much time in BK before 2010 but even then there was a totally different feel to today, and a lot fewer bike lanes. My brother lived in Bed Stuy then and I visited frequently, often staying out for the entire night, sneaking into places we shouldn’t and be going onto rooftops. Back then the Brooklyn Brewery felt like it was on mars. The Domino Sugar Factory wasn’t condos, it was abandoned and being crushed with graffiti nightly. I got to check out 5 POINTZ before it was whitewashed. I know even at that point a lot of people had already been pushed out and the character was gone. But now it feels like a caricature of itself, chasing the long-gone vapors.
All of that’s to say when E said “BK before the bike lanes” I took it as marching orders to use art to immortalize a time and place that are gone and won’t be coming back. His music nails that, I hope my artwork does too. If you read all that, cheers!
