Hello, I’ve never fully introduced myself. My name is Logan Ning Gee or Logan Ning Estrada Gee but my family calls me “Ning” and my friends call me “G”
My name is a double edged sword, it carries a lineage and a part of my heritage that as a white presenting person many are not afforded. It also welcomed jokes, jabs and ignorance and at times when I was younger I welcomed those remarks to as an acknowledgment of my heritage, because I wasn’t fully raised connected to a culture. I even heard these things amongst family members and so I saw nothing wrong with it. On my father side we were the first Chinese to be wedded in New Orleans.
On my mother side we have a line of fractures, those fractures have created dead ends and shame. Shame from colonization, shame from stepping out or stepping in to roles as wives, husbands, mothers & fathers. As our roots are from Mazatenango, Guatemala when does one tradition or culture erase another? When did my family from Guatemala have to assimilate to their ancestors traditions from across the ocean. When did we become ladino, or did we? *Ladino* an indigenous person who has adopted Hispanic culture. What Spanish do you speak, do you even speak Spanish, the language of those who took your mother’s tongues. The silence, the hush hush, the don’t question, the withheld memories of photos and stories leaves us lost and found. I can only speculate on my paternal grandfather and what pushed or pulled him away, but at least I see my face in his. (photos 7,8 & 12) I was blessed to have an amazing step grandfather (photo 2-sitting with my father’s father & photo 4) and a step Great grandmother (photo 3) in our lives. They were from Tegusigalpa, Honduras and treated me as blood. I have so much to say about them but this post is already too long lol - continue in the comments-👇
Hey everyone, my new album “Clocking Clouds” is out now on all platforms! Man, it’s been a journey. It started three years ago with a track called “Saudade,” inspired by the loss of my grandfather. I was parked in the middle of nowhere, laying on top of my car, staring at the clouds, feeling the weight of that moment.
Over the years, as I faced more losses and celebrated beautiful moments, the title of the project took shape. It’s a reflection of those emotional moments, grief, gratitude, and growth and it’s been a privilege to experience it all.
