Today, on Armed Forces Day, we honor the brave men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces and thank them for their dedication to our nation.
As a Navy veteran and Commander in Chief, President George H.W. Bush understood the sacrifice military service requires. In his 1989 Armed Forces Day Proclamation, he shared:
“Our Nation is strong today because the members of our Armed Forces are vigilant, active, and brave.”
We are grateful for all who serve and for their continued commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear.

Pam Cote, Senior Director of the Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy, recently joined educators from across the state of New York for @nyacce annual conference, themed “Making Waves in Adult Education: Together We Rise.”
She shared reflections on adult literacy as an integral part of family literacy and the critical importance of strong teacher-student relationships, saying, “It’s about connection. It’s about the relationships we build with our students—and with each other—that create real, lasting impact.”
Barbara Bush believed deeply that everyone deserves the opportunity to improve their lives—and their families’ lives—through literacy. We’re grateful for the educators who make that opportunity possible every day.

— President George H.W. Bush, 1992
President Bush believed environmental stewardship and a strong future go hand in hand. Today, we continue that commitment through stewardship and service.
Today, we honor the life and legacy of former First Lady Barbara Bush on the anniversary of her passing.
She brought warmth, honesty, and humor to public life, guided by deep conviction and a steadfast devotion to faith, family, friends, and country. Literacy was especially close to her heart, and her lifelong advocacy continues to open doors and change lives for generations.
We pause in gratitude to remember her extraordinary service and the enduring legacy she leaves behind.
“But what defines this nation? What makes us America is not our ties to a piece of territory or bonds of blood; what makes us American is our allegiance to an idea—that all people everywhere must be free.”
President George H. W. Bush shared these words while addressing students at the Maxwell Air Force Base War College in April 1991, at a moment of global change and renewed opportunity. He believed America’s strength was rooted not in geography, but in shared ideals—and in our responsibility to uphold them.
