Thre Jewel Air Force 1 was first released in late 1996/early 1997.
The Jewel Force was one of, if not the first "Retro +". A classic legacy silhouette, modified with contemporary branding.
The Jewel itself dates back to 1994, first appearing on the Uptempo 94. Nike continued to use the Jewel on shirts such as the Air Max CW (sensation) and Foamposite Pro. It was a mark of excellence, first showcased in Nikes flagship basketball shoes.
Incorporating the Jewel into the Air Force 1 was a great way to modernize the classic basketball silhouette with a feature/logo on their contemporary top tier basketball shoes.
Personally, I love the Jewel Force. The majority of my favorite AF1s are Jewel pairs. That 97-03 run was incredible.

The Nike Shox BB4 was introduced in the year 2000. The Nike Shox technology was touted as the greatest innovation like he would come out with since Zoom air.
The shoe was designed by Eric Avar, inspired by NASA suits. The BB4 deviated from many other Alpha project shoes, displaying a much more mechanical design language with straight lines as opposed to the organic fluidity that defined many earlier Alpha Project silhouettes.
The BB4 and entire Shox line was extremely popular in is day. These were the "gotta have it" pair of 2000 & 2001.
