(26/30) How do we feel about this look? Clean or nah? Super easy setup. Just a fairly dark room, one light directly behind your subject (no diffusion and on full blast), a spray bottle, water, and a little bit of slow-mo and coloring in post. Voilà. (24/30) I never travel or go on a shoot without these 3 things! 1. A completely empty spare SSD. This is a MUST. I shoot direct to SSD instead of SDs or CFs and having a spare that’s completely empty is a lifesaver if something goes wrong with the first one. I also use it to back up my footage after the shoot or move footage onto if I need to clear space on the primary. 2. A fully charged power bank. I use the Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD 45W. I know, it’s a mouthful. This thing has saved me several times from being screwed over by dead batteries. Whether it’s my camera batteries, my phone, headphones, or even my laptop - it’ll charge it all several times over before running out of power. 3. A set of allen wrenches or a small multitool. Gear and mounts always loosen at the worst moment. 21/30 My (mildly) hot takes. We won’t be too extreme today. 1.) The dress shot is overrated. It works well for photos but it’s just not worth the hassle for wedding films. Can it help craft the story? Sure. Will I continue to do them? Yeah. Do I think it’s necessary? No. 2.) The videographer needs their own time with the couple. Even 15 minutes added into the portraits can make a world of difference. The photographer gets the majority of the day to lead the show. Giving the videographer just a short time can mean the difference between a good “video” and a great film. (The photographer can still tag along…just take a back seat) 3.) Not having personal vows or letters to each other removes so much emotion from your film (and your day). It’s obviously your wedding and you should do whatever you want on your day…but you won’t regret adding a personal touch to your vows or making time before the wedding to share letters with each other in private.
