The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) invites you to the Opening Reception of “Bryan Fernandez: En tránsito,” the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition, curated by Zuna Maza. Join us for the Opening Reception on Tuesday, March 17, 6–8pm. Centering his own Dominican American community, Fernandez creates large-scale assemblage paintings that capture moments from everyday life and tell stories about his community and obscured diasporic histories. He has observed the lack of authentic representation of Dominicans in national narratives and aims to counter colonial and Afrophobic accounts through his work. The exhibition brings together a selection of the artist’s most recent and ongoing works, reflecting on the ways in which modes of transportation, diasporic flows, and surveillance in public spaces intersect. Bryan Fernandez is an interdisciplinary artist from Washington Heights, New York City who is of Afro-Dominican descent. Fernandez holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and is an MFA candidate at Yale School of Art. His works have been exhibited at institutions including The Shed, New York; New Image Art Gallery, Los Angeles, California; MECA Art Fair, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Untitled Art Fair, Miami, Florida. He is a two-time Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grantee and his work is currently in the Bronx AIM biennial at the Bronx Museum, New York. He is a 2024–25 recipient of The New York Community Trust’s Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund Residency at ISCP. Can you believe I have yet to make an Instagram post about the show I’ll be in at the @bronxmuseum for their 7th AIM Biennial . Opening January 23rd and remaining open till June 28th, this exhibition marks my first ever Museum Biennial. It brings me a lot of joy to know it’s happening in uptown. The history I have with the borough of the Bronx has only grown richer because of this. But additionally, besides me, I’ll be in great company with many other talented artists who like me, are looking forward to making the most out of this moment with each other. . January 23rd, from 6-8pm is the opening reception mi gente. I return to New Haven tomorrow to continue my semester at @yalepainting pero trust me when I say this, I have one more surprise announcement to make sometime soon, stay tuned! Cuidate

Hola mi gente, here’s something I’ve been meaning to share for quite sometime . As of today I am officially a part of the digital archives for @cunydsi as a part of their “Dominican Artists in the United States” project on JSTOR. Dedicated to Dominican Artists the United States, not only does this project aim to archive our work but also make our work and documentation more accessible to a larger audience. All works and documents can be cited via JSTOR link in bio. . Thank you @cunydsi for the opportunity! As you can see, I tagged various people and institutions as simply out, work and documentation that I’ve included date all the way back to 2020, from my first group show in SVA and New York to my most recent projects (there’s even an audio file of my artist talk with @yelaineartspace in there 🫣) . Hope you guys can check it out

Amidst a hectic end of the Semester, I wanted to take some time to share that I have officially become a 3-time @elizabethgreenshieldsfdn Grantee! . I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and the support the Greenshields foundation has provided me for my artistic journey. It was only 5 years ago that I had won my first grant to complete my undergrad studies at @svafinearts , 5 years later, funding will now go to complete my graduate studies @yalepainting at @yaleschoolofart , talk about a pivotal moment! To the Elizabeth Greenshields foundation, from the bottom of my heart, mi corazon, mon cœur (pardon my French), thank you. I look forward to making this upcoming academic year the best I can make it . See you guys during artwork mi gente

“Abre mi camino, dale consejos, y yo sigue” Oil Pastel on Canvas 2026 . Last piece of the semester mi gente. To be fair, if you saw my last post, you’d know i have a lot of work I need to formally share individually and write about here but for now I’ll start with this piece. It’s incredible to think about what it means to engage with histories and practice that pre-date the spaces I work in but will also out last them. As this part of my practice evolves, I find this is where the true documentarian nature of it comes to life. I still get a real joy from these drawings as much as my mixed media works on canvas. I find that my faith and agency over myself has grown as well a desire to still depict daily life that pulls me in. It may sound cliche, but there truly is beauty that can found almost anywhere, that’s something that hasn’t gone away with my relationship with home, that to me is a practice i am intent on keeping🇩🇴🗽more works to be posted soon mi gente, have a great week! . #follow for more art #bryanfernandez

Yale Open Studios coming up next weekend mi gente, April 11th and 12th, plus a photo dump of some experiences and inspirations for what I’ve been up too! . This post is gonna get a little meta so be prepared jajajajaja, but this semester has been very productive despite all that I’ve been outside of school. I’ll be presenting my large scale assemblage pieces plus a variety of other smaller works I’ve been exploring. I know Yale “painting” gets a lot of hype (to be fair we are quite interdisciplinary) but to those coming that weekend, be sure to check out the other departments on campus, some of my favorite artists such as @cameronpatricia_ @taisha_carrington @mybelovedbronx and @erichartjr will also be presenting what they’ve been creating! I also highly encourage you guys to check out @__nxthvn__ where my colleague @mstarafay has a curated exhibition there and @sophia.yemisi.adeyemo who will be presenting work during their open studios. I guess you can consider it New Haven Art weekend. I’ll also be a part of a one weekend only group exhibition with @youngbauhaus @yournameissolong @luciareissig @markwilson.jr @k.sernaa @inkpa_mani_art @no.bad.surprises @chy.nique happening downtown on April 11th at 7pm. Busy weekend to say the least! To those who can’t make it, stay tuned as @iscp_nyc will have their own open studios where my current exhibition “En Transito” will be on view during then! . On one final note, in the name of friendly banter….. 🇩🇴🇭🇹🇻🇪>🇵🇷🇨🇴🇨🇺🇲🇽🇬🇹>🌎

Hola mi gente, while everything is still fresh I wanted to write this post to personally thank everyone who was able to make it to the opening of “En Tránsito” last night @iscp_nyc . From people who were with me in my earliest residency at Chautauqua to new colleagues from Yale and the Bronx AIM biennial, last night was a display of community that I wasn’t prepared for yet welcomed with open arms. Last night was a big moment for my journey as an artist and I am forever grateful for the opportunity. . For specific thank you, @zuna.g.m.m of @elmuseo ,thank you for curating the exhibition! Your writing and thoughtfulness shaped “En Tránsito” into what we organized. Thank you to the many staff at ISCP such as @melindamlang , @ezra_moth , Susan Hapgood and the many other valuable staff that make ISCP be what it is today. Thank you to the Van Lier Fellowship for the opportunity of a lifetime it feels. But most importantly, thank you all for your support. Ete mensaje ta en inglés, pero es por todo lo gente de las americas, but if there’s one thing last nights opening showed me, is how interconnected people and places are, from the Archipelago of the Caribbean to the continental americas! I may not know what’s next however, I look forward to getting there with many of you by my side . The show closes August 7th, right around the Dominican Day Parade in manhattan, make sure to stop by mi gente!🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴 . On one final note, felicidades 🇻🇪🇻🇪🇻🇪 por el campeon de @wbcbaseball !!!!

Excited to be doing this (except another announcement from ISCP soon) but It is truly my pleasure, to announce my debut New York City, and first-ever institutional solo show, “En Tránsito” happening at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP @iscp_nyc ), opening March 17th and closing August 7th, curated by Assistant Curator of El Museo de Barrio, Zuna Maza (@zuna.g.m.m ) . It may be hard to believe but up to this point I’ve never had a chance to do a solo show in New York. However everything happens for a reason as I couldn’t imagine a better place to show this body of work. From a zine to a backpack puppet and digital collage work, “En Tránsito” marks my most experimental body of work to date, and arguably my most pivotal given where the work and my time at ISCP has brought me. . To those who are unaware, one of the works from this project is already up , at the @bronxmuseum AIM biennial where, since the last post I’ve made about the exhibition, has now gone on to be featured in both the New York Times and Hyperallergic. The response has been incredible for me. Speaking of “En Tránsito” has also been featured in @latinxprojnyu as a show to see this year! Thank @alexsantanana for the feature . With that being said, I hope to see many of you for the opening March 17th, if you haven’t already, take yourself out to the @bronxmuseum too! Por mi barrio y patria 🗽🇩🇴

It feels as though now is the time to address this moment . It was literally yesterday while I was in Crit when artist @katie.chin.and shared to me the @forbes write up on the biennial with an emphasis on our pieces respectively. This comes only a day after the @bronxtimes had also featured me and countless other artists such as @delvinlugo , @massielmafes and @motohirotakeda would also be featured in the article and instagram page. There’s even a feature in @turkishtimeofficial jajaja . A lot joy is being felt right now mi gente, and excitement. This feels a like a big moment for my journey, and I am grateful for every last bit of it. I’m not sure what much else to say right now as I have to take everything in first still jajajaja, pero Mira, por mi barrio 🗽, mi patria 🇩🇴, and most importantly, the community I’m fortunate to have. A special thank you to the @bronxmuseum , to curators @patrickdrowe and Nell who organized AIM, many of the other staff at the museum such as @eileenj8 and Lilly and congratulations to all the artists within the biennial. It’s a privilege to be with you all! Gracias! More to come . Last photo was taken by @rcembalest . All the artists in the Biennial will be commented down below! Cuidate mi gente!
