This week, I was reminded to re-listen to a conversation we had three years ago on @themergingpathpodcast . The world has changed a lot since then — AI slop, wars, highly publicized cases of abuse — but one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for men to have more open and meaningful conversations to learn, unlearn and prevent violence against women and girls. I was in one of those conversations this week in one of my closest networks. I bore witness to a friend moving from a lack of awareness to awareness to positive action — all in a safe and loving environment. It is a unique joy I hope you’ll get to experience. Most leaders weren’t taught how to coach. They were promoted because they were great at their job — not because anyone showed them how to develop other people. So they default to what they know: giving advice, avoiding the hard conversation, or just hoping people figure it out. I built the Merging Path Professional Coach Training to bridge this exact gap. De-escalation isn’t passive. It isn’t endless talking. It isn’t hoping someone calms down. De-escalation is active. Time. Distance. Positioning. Tone. Eye contact. Kindness. Control. If we want fewer moments where force becomes final, we have to get louder about what good de-escalation actually looks like. Force ends when the threat stops. But an officer’s responsibility doesn’t. We talk about how force is used, but not enough about what happens after. Duty of care means offering medical aid and help even to someone who may have just tried to harm you. If we skip that part, we’re not talking about the full picture. Scott is a professionally certified Executive Coach, Interpersonal Communications Expert, Strategic Advisor, and Chief Culture Curator at Merging Path Coaching—a firm he founded that specializes in leadership and management training. Prior to becoming an executive coach, Brooks served as the VP of Safety for a cybersecurity company, managed operations for the bodyguard team of the CEO and COO of Meta, served as a New Jersey State Trooper, and was a 5th-grade elementary school teacher. He is also the current COO of a New York-based law firm. Brooks facilitates leadership and communications courses to the world’s top companies and has coached hundreds of leaders.
