Welcome back! Tuesday night we stopped at the only #HaagenDazs location here in the Bronx.
A. Because it was hot and B., because of its Bronx roots. Oh you didn’t know? Well let us put you on game.
Häagen-Daz was founded right here in The Bronx in 1960 by Reuben and Rose Mattus, a Polish Jewish couple who each emigrated to the U.S. in 1921. Actually, it was at 551 Wales Ave where the Mattus’s lived and more than likely where Reuben made up the name Häagen Dazs and started their company.
Inspired by his admiration for Denmark’s treatment of Danish Jews during World War II. Mattus felt that Denmark was also known for its dairy products and had a positive image in the United States. He sat around trying out Danish-sounding names until he came up with one he liked.
But the phrase “Häagen-Dazs” not only has no actual meaning in Danish (or any other language), There is no umlaut in Danish. An umlaut is the two dots over the a (ä)
What Reuben used was a marketing tool known as foreign branding which is the use of a foreign or foreign-sounding word to indicate something about that product.
An examples is:
Outback Steakhouse. It’s an American casual dining restaurant chain with an Australian theme.
They started with only three flavors: vanilla, chocolate and coffee. the company opened its first retail store in Brooklyn on November 15, 1976 and it’s still open and operating today. It is now owned by General Mills. It’s sold in more than 900 shops and is in 50 countries! That’s your Bronx history!

If you’re from the Bronx, chances are you’ve heard of or once frequented Sin City but do you know it’s story? Tuesday night we went to what remains for the former strip club.
It was started by kanstantine Gus Drakapoulus. He grew up in Astoria, Queens in a Greek-Italian neighborhood. At 18 he had no inspiration and came across an opportunity to become a stockbroker and he claims he made a lot of legit money. Yet he has a criminal past of fraud.
In 2002 he became friends with his future mentor, who was an adult nightclub owner in Texas partnered with him & another man and opened #SinCityCabaret here in the South Bronx.
Their target demographic was not the white-collar clientele the Manhattan clubs attracted. It was the urban market, athletes, celebrities, and industry people. Instantly, the place was a success, with celebs like Mike Tyson, Drake, P. Diddy, 50 Cent, Odell Beckham Jr., Chris Rock, Kevin Hart. Yo, even actress Susan Surrandan frequented the place!
Sin City became known for its famous Champagne Room. At its peak, Sin City hauled in nearly $12 million a year. And it was considered both a rare bright spot in a long-depleted economy and was one of the community’s largest employers of Black and Hispanic residents.
According to former employees, dancers there could make between $1,000-$2,000 a night in and bottle girls up to $600 a night. Although it was financially viable, Sin City was making enemies & became a problem to community board members and others. And the complaints didn’t just come from the outside.
They had a mountain of complaints from its own employees of racism, sexual harassment and it being a hostile work environment. Y’all, there was even a report of a manager that would put his finger in…well what do you know, we’re out of time! But check back for part 2. That’s your Bronx history!

Last night we set out to find the waterfront park here in the South Bronx that we first learned about last week on @welcome2thebronx ’s Instagram page. We are a little confused if it’s in the Mott Haven or Port Morris section because when we googled it and according to these maps, the two overlap. Shoutout to @cool_riss ’s TikTok page which gave us a visual guide to the entrance. It’s pretty hidden so we want to show you as well.
If you head down 3rd Avenue and go underneath the Third Avenue Bridge on the right side you’ll see a driveway to this building that makes you think it’s just the entrance to this building but it’s not. Walk up the driveway and you’ll see steps next to the building entrance to this beauty…The Bronx Waterfront Park. We want Bronxites to know this is a public space. It’s your space so come, enjoy and take advantage of this new gem of The Bronx.
According to Ed Conde’s article on Welcome2TheBronx.com “the new waterfront park is part of the Bankside luxury development that is gentrifying the neighborhood but thanks to provisions within the Special Harlem River Waterfront Rezoning, any development within the rezoned area must provide a Shore Public Walkway.” So in order for them to be allowed to build these luxury apartments that the average bronxite can’t afford they had to make this open to the public. But you see how sneaky they are at trying to hide it from us.
What’s cool about this is eventually this will link to the Harlem River Greenway and will run from Van Cortlandt Park all the way down to Randall’s Island.
Bronxites, come out, relax and enjoy your waterfront before summers over!
