Natalie Bronfman focused on Paul’s (Nicolas Cage) silhouette in the highly anticipated film “Dream Scenario.” Following the character arc of Paul, the psychological state of the character helped inform Bronfman’s research and costume design.
“Clothes are always a huge reflection on a character’s state of mind,” says Bronfman. “What was interesting about this character was delving into what it might feel like to be ostracized from society for absolutely no reason. He wears his parka like a security blanket.” Bronfman wanted Paul to look like the same PhD student that graduated in the 1990s—big parka, clunky shoes, with an outdoorsiness reflecting his nameless East Coast suburban location. “That to Paul is the height of fashion—he wears hiking boots to school,” says Bronfman. “It’s a nostalgic, set-in-his-ways look that’s also a bit off-kilter, which was fun to play with.”
Bronfman also placed great emphasis on Paul’s shoes over the course of the movie, accentuating the character’s bumbling yet affable physical presence, which conceals something darker. “Paul wears his shoes even in the house—he’s clunky and awkward, even though he’s trying not to be,” says Bronfman. “Even when he’s tender, he’s simmering with rage, and his footwear reflects this.”
