In case you missed it, a new episode of Scene Support came out last week. I sat with Max Kozol at Broken String Booking, and we talked about what it really takes to keep a DIY music scene moving. Max is a Massachusetts-based promoter, sound tech, junior talent buyer at The Middle East in Cambridge, and part of Broken String Booking. We get into Boston and Cambridge DIY, O’Brien’s Pub, Warehouse 11, tour booking, talent buying, backline chaos, burnout, band hospitality, safe spaces, and why showing up for local music still matters. I first connected with Max while booking Meow Meow’s April tour, and honestly, I was immediately blown away by their responsiveness, enthusiasm, and professionalism. In this clip, we talk about how we were messaging back and forth on New Year’s Eve, working through show details while most people were probably out celebrating. That kind of care and excitement says a lot about who Max is and the work they do for bands. DIY scenes survive because of people like this: people who answer the message, build the bill, open the room, run the sound, solve the problem, and still somehow stay excited about the next show. I met Max while booking @meowmeowband ‘s April tour and was immediately taken with her enthusiasm, professionalism, and deep commitment to DIY music. Max is a Massachusetts-based promoter, sound tech, and junior talent buyer at @mideastclub in Cambridge, with roots in booking shows for her own band and doing the behind-the-scenes work that turns scattered opportunities into real community. We get into Boston and Cambridge DIY, @broken_string_booking , @obrienspubboston , @warehouse_xi ,tour booking, talent buying, backline chaos, burnout, band hospitality, safe spaces, and why showing up for local music still matters. In this clip, Max talks about one of the first real challenges of becoming a promoter: learning how to book consistent shows for other people, not just her own band. She reflects on early booking experience at the short-lived Rockwood Music Hall branch near Fenway, where she had 10 or 11 shows lined up in just a couple months before the venue shut down. It’s a great reminder that DIY booking is part passion, part problem-solving, part heartbreak, and part just keeping at it anyway.
