Album Release Notice:
Covering My Brothers (Shagrat Records 10” Vinyl LP ENT 026)
Bridget St. John
Singer/songwriter/guitarist,
Bridget St. John releases a brand new
10” mini-album, Covering My Brothers
Following numerous reissues of her impressive back catalogue and
various recent live recordings, Shagrat Records are proud to present
a themed four-track mini album, Covering My Brothers.
When Bridget started out in the music business in the late 1960s,
she had few female allies on the folk and rock circuit. Championed
by the late DJ, John Peel, Bridget found herself performing on very
male-dominated bills but quickly forged ties with her fellow
musicians. Sharing stages with them, Bridget soon proved herself
their equal and her encounters with them led to lifelong friendships.
As Bridget says, ‘I grew up with sisters but found my brothers
through music... our connections date back decades and lasted for
their lifetimes... these are my interpretations of songs written by
four of them’.
Side 1
Michael Chapman’s ‘Aviator’
Side 2
• Nick Drake’s ‘Fly’
• John Martyn’s ‘Head and
• Kevin Ayers ‘Jolie Madame’
Coming to our stage this Thursday, April 10, is a rare, stars must be aligned, pairing of two revered legends in their own time - Evie Sands and Bridget St. John.
Two triple-threat singer-songwriter-instrumentalists sharing one stage promises across-career highlights and delights - meaningful, memorable, illuminating and sly fun. Although these two cherished icons of Northern Soul (Evie) and British "Psych Folk" (Bridget) may appear to be continents and genres apart, their free-spirits feel connected, with both sirens possessing treasured singular voices within the music biz cacophony who have managed to persevere, staying true to their artful paths with a multitude of grace and with both still full-on creatively - hence the tour's title - "A Woman's Work Is Never Done."
Get your tickets now, and be sure to tune in to KALX 90.7FM this Wednesday (4/9) at 12:30pm for an interview & acoustic performance from both Evie Sands & Bridget St. John, hosted by Sex 14s.

A Tribute to Les Cousins: Soho's Legendary Folk & Blues Club
Les Cousins was situated in the basement of a restaurant owned by Loukas and Margaret Matheou at 49 Greek Street, London. Previously home to the Skiffle Cellar (c. 1956), the venue opened as Les Cousins in 1964 and was run by the Matheou’s son, Andy.
Prominent in the British folk music revival of the mid-1960s, it was breeding ground for like minded musicians of the time and influential in the careers of Jackson C. Frank, Al Stewart, Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, Alexis Korner, The Strawbs, The Young Tradition and Paul Simon (other notable guests included Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, The Watersons, The Incredible String Band, Anne Briggs and Bob Dylan).
As well as its star-studded list of alumni, regular all-nighter events earned the club its title as “the cheapest hotel in London”.
On March 10 we’ll revisit the club's legacy in the company of four Cousins alumni who need little introduction: Trad-folk finger-style maestro Martin Carthy; 'Ask Me No Questions' author Bridget St. John; the-guitarist-that-influenced-Martin-Carthy Wizz Jones; and editor of fRoots and musician Ian A. Anderson.
If that wasn't enough, we'll also be joined by singer Diana Matheou, wife to the late Andy Matheou and custodian to the club’s legacy.
Hosted by Jon Wilks.
