Here’s a picture of my cracked copy of “I’ll Be Home Soon” by Beau Williams pinned to my bedroom wall. The story behind me unearthing the reel to reel tape in Houston years ago is a whole other story altogether, but I’ll keep this brief. When T&S put this out I had some promo copies that I was able to pass along to friends and I just so happened to meet @iwant45s randomly at a record store during that time (yeah, surprise…surprise!). Anyway, I passed him a copy and we became friends from that point forward. I have a lot of love for him and appreciate all the jokes, radio sessions/ dj nights, tequila shots (maybe not tequila shots), and hangs we’ve shared in NYC together. I’m bummed he’s moving across the country but happy for his next chapter. It’s important to shout out people that have been influential in your life and Alston has been that for me. Life is all about the friends you make along the way.

2 of 2 Lee passed away last Friday, December 8th, 2023, in Nashville after suffering a stroke. He will always be in my thoughts and his music will live on for eternity. I dedicated my recent radio show to him as a tribute. Over the course of the show, I included numerous voicemails from Lee and one from his friend and producer Isaac who shared his thoughts on Tracy and moving forward with his legacy always in the front seat. Feel free to give it a listen -- "One For Lee" /watch?v=CN01ZGtD8mM

1 of 2 Lee Tracy Johnson was a kind soul with a gentle voice and infectious laugh that I grew to know well. We met shortly after the New Year in 2022, after I had spent years dealing with his producer Isaac Manning with music they had created from the late eighties to early nineties - all recorded direct to cassette. I distinctly remember meeting Lee for a short stack of pancakes in East Nashville and following our meal by playing his '89 record "Is It What You Want '' in my car off youtube. We sat in my Honda Accord in the parking lot both mesmerized by what was coming out of the tiny speaker of my IPhone 11. Lee sat silent while I looked back and forth at my screen and his face to check his reaction. When the song ended he looked at me in shock and couldn't believe what he had just heard. He had felt reawakened. "It was like I had been a tomb for years up until that moment". We drove around listening to his music as he reminisced about coming up in Nashville and how he often felt misunderstood. He didn't dress like anyone else and felt like it was hard to relate with the masses, which I took to heart. Several times over the course of us hanging out I took video and as many photos as I possibly could. I wanted him to know that he was special and his music meant so much to people around the world and his story and legacy was important. He would call me to shoot the breeze. We would talk about the past, present, and future. He was in awe that his music was so well received worldwide (decades after it was recorded) and I always made a point to reinforce that to lift his spirits. I'll never forget him telling me every phone call we had that it was "great to hear from you, always love hearing from you". I let him know the truth was I felt the same on my end. His calls became a part of my everyday life, regardless if I could answer or not. I knew he was there, especially when seeing three missed calls. It's always hard to wrap your head around a familiar voice or presence that ends up being a memory once it's gone, and Lee is no exception.
