I haven’t been making or sharing any personal work. For a year now I’ve felt that my work needed to have a stronger message and be more political. The photos I make are mostly intended to be beautiful and because of that it often feels shallow and pointless but right now I think that the world needs beauty. It needs something pretty to look at to make us remember what it’s like to feel something other than hate or fear or depression. Making beautiful images brings me joy and I hope it makes you feel something positive as well.
We’re sharing a selection of Brian Kanagaki’s still lifes alongside a short sequence from Doldrums. The still lifes show his sense of balance and form, while Doldrums turns toward the Bay Area and the way nature can steady you during moments of change.
The series explores feeling your way through change and recognizing the beauty that shows up over time, moving from a heavier period into a place shaped by connection, reflection, and the kind of growth you only understand later.
Brian has been with us for a few years now, and his orders are always striking and memorable, the kind of work that stays with you.
