After 17 years we are saying good bye to our lovely 1912 Craftsmen home in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. We bought this property in 2007 as part of the Mozart Project development. Although I am a modernist I am also deeply respectful of our architectural heritage and restoring this home was a labor of love (and a lot of sweat). It was a great home to raise our two daughters in before moving into one of my own designs at SEA4 just up the road.
Now listed for sale with the amazing Rande Turner Collective led by the wonderful Gillian Flynn. Our humble home was brought into a new era with staging by James Markel. Special thanks to Eric from Oolong Gallery for providing all original art and Print Woodshop for feature plants.

Over the weekend took a walk and grabbed a bite to eat in one of my favorite San Diego neighborhoods Del Mar Terrace. This area is a showcase of inspired architecture that is set into sandstone bluffs among palms and torrey pines.

The Cornish House is set on a small irregular shaped lot. One of the big challenges was to maintain privacy but also have usable outdoor spaces that expanded the feel of the home. In this case the usual throw away suburban front yard setback was repurposed with a walled courtyard for the primary bedroom. A water feature that passed under the wall was added that both hushed road noise and tied the areas together.
When there is no opportunity for a rear garden and you have an amazing view the reverse floor plan is the right decision. Bi-folding doors that completely fold to the side also extend the space nicely.

With years of construction completed and all new projects in the permit process I wanted to share this house that I designed & built a few years back in Encinitas. This project received a fair amount of publicity at the time but I never posted it properly on Instagram. The small 2 bed home is cedar clad and has a reverse floor plan for capturing views of the Pacific. It's a nice example of the "lantern" effect at night that I try to bring to all projects.

Light is in many ways another architectural building material. It creates mood, feeling and sometimes intangible ideas like home, the passing of time, seasons, comfort and relaxation. I worked with photographer Doug Roubichad aka @killerdogma after seeing his shots for @printwoodshop . He captured these ideas on film at the SEA4 project in an easy natural way.
