Seldom has a bike I built received such positive reactions as this one. Mostly because it seems to spread a good vibe, awaken curiosity to ride it, and speak to the inner child in some people. To me, this build is a reminder that a bicycle, besides being many other things, can also be a toy, and that cycling is a simple form of play suitable for everyone.
@brenwell picked up his bike a few weeks ago and took it to his new home in Freiburg. After a long, often difficult, and sometimes even frustrating process of building the frameset, I am very happy that he can finally enjoy riding it.
When @johnprolly visited me in my workshop for @theradavist , he took all the amazing pictures shared in this post. Thanks for your hard work and for the enjoyable company.

Transdolomiti 🇮🇹 :: Day 6
Santa Christina - Brixen
52km 👉 and 860m 👆
High point: Finally no more climbing. Really I have mixed feelings about this trip. It was good to be back on the bike, great to see the boys, but I have lost a lot of fitness and perhaps a bit of passion for it. Let’s see.
Low point: The holiday is over. Good bye to Shorty and Chris. Back to our individual corners of Germany.
Bonus point: The route is only hard because of the climbing. But there is an awful lot of it. If you are fit it is a great first bikepacking route. If you are not - don’t torture yourself.

Transdolomiti 🇮🇹 :: Day 5
Malga Ciapela - Santa Christina
56km 👉 and 2166m 👆
High point: Watching the marmots scurry into the burrows as we road past.
Low point: So much hard climbing that the group had a drop in mood.
Bonus point: Dudes in groups of motorcycles are losers.

Transdolomiti 🇮🇹 :: Day 4
Selva Di Cadore - Malga Ciapela
36km 👉 and 1534m 👆
High point: We made amazing sandwiches which I did not photograph.
Low point:: We travelled through lots of tall grass and Shorty and I got crazy itchy.
Bonus point: Chris is looking for a girl who likes long walks on the beach, flat whites and getting caught in the rain.

Transdolomiti 🇮🇹 :: Day 3
Cortina D’Ampezzo - Selva Di Cadore
42km 👉 and 1495m 👆
High point: Super fun technical single track. Started in the snow, then rock garden, open green grass, dense forest and then down the road. All in all 14kms of fun.
Low point:: Fitness still absent.
Bonus point: Found a premium abandoned hut to sleep in.

Transdolomiti 🇮🇹 :: Day 2
Zannes - Cortina D’Ampezzo
65km 👉 and 1569m 👆
High point: the thunder threatened as we reached the peak of the day’s final pass. We took a quick group pics while the first drops of rain landed. We knew we needed to rush to avoid being soaked, so with sense of urgency and smiles on our faces we raced the weather to the bottom. Being slightly riskier than we should. It was so exhilarating. So much fun.
Low point:: The weather won.
Bonus point: Apparently the Dolomites used to be a coral reef.

Transdolomiti 🇮🇹 :: Day 1
Brixen - Zannes
33km 👉 and 1741m 👆
High point: Beautiful view to end the day.
Low point:: First bike trip since crossing Australia 1 and a half years ago. Not a trace of the fitness I had then remains. One of the hardest days on the bike in recent memory. Very hot, very steep and very unfit.
Bonus point: Good to be back.

Big thanks to @drustcycles school. After 3+ years I finally finished my own frame and built it up. It was meant to be a gravel bike but the parts lying around my house lead to a different destiny. It will be the ultimate city bike. The highlights are the numerous brazeons, the always in lighting and the double kickstand. #kickstandsarecool #gravelbike #customeframe
There are those moments that feel like personal milestones, and @brenwell finishing his framebuilding class could be one of those. We started almost three years ago but had to interrupt the workshop due to unexpected and unlucky circumstances. Since then he occasionally and often spontaneously came back to continued working on his frame. Three years is a significant amount of time for a young business. He witnessed my workshop growing, my equipment and tooling expanding and even my dog passing puberty. Brendon and his frame are almost part of my corporate identity.
It's impossible to determine how many hours went into this and I am sure it's much more than the usual five days. But in the end, all that matters to me is that he could create something he can be happy and proud of. This is the goal of every instructed frame build I've ever supervised.
Generally, my philosophy with first-timers is to keep the difficulty at a level that I consider challenging but manageable depending on the experiences and skills of the students. I try to plan the frame in a way that building it covers different manufacturing techniques and the use of machine and hand tools. The goal should always be to fulfill the dream of building a bicycle, not to build a dream bicycle. There is just a small difference in wording, but a huge one in the expectations people have for themselves. Well done! I'm happy you made it, and nice work on your first self-made bicycle frame.
