A conversation between composer and artist, impressario Neo Muyanga and Senegalese philosopher and scholar Souleymane Bachir Diagne leads us to reflect about the Africa we have today, and becomes the inspiration behind our sonic dialogues this month on #TJS.
Different players from different spaces in this world, all sharing one thing in common. A human face. Botho, Setho, Batho in all its accents.
Our conversation about Africa is like connecting from the root outwards and back to the centre.
This week we have bassist Orlanda de Conceicao, a Mozambican bassist double bassist and singer billed for #JOJ and the acclaimed pianist and composer Kris Davis.
Intentional contoured conversations molded with music every Sunday on Kaya 959...AfricaMonth

My first job in JHB was as a waitress at the Bassline, Melville. The shift was 4pm (clean & set up); 6pm (band rehearsal) 8pm (live🙌🏾) Rre @vusimahlasela was the 1st performer to ask “Mosetsana o mang?!” ❤️🙌🏾 Here I am in the Karoo! I also have to acknowledge my late friend Sandile Sibeko 🚖 #IYKYK who would drop me off at work when he had the chance! #dowhatyoulove and it will love you back. WE ARE COMING BACK!
A show about jazz katara? Or jazz ancestry? Or about new vistas? Perhaps all of the above.
This week we are in the company of veteran guitarists Vusi Mahlasela before the @journeytojazzfestival and Bobby Broom...the latter who gives us a window into the Jazz Collosus Master Sonny Rollins …I travelled to jazzahead! in Bremen, Germany for the 20th edition and enjoy lovely chats with artists on the bill this year from Sweden, Italy, Lithuania and more...
Sidney Mavundla brought a formidable band of Afrika Mkhize, Peter Auret, Dalisu Ndlazi to his showcase spearheaded by The African Jazz Network.
Thank you Jazzahead, you beauty. It sure was a blast...

The story reads like a jazz fable.
A young Afrobibliophile who happens to love jazz music leads us to a much desired introduction of Noni Jabavu by the brilliant Sis Makhosazana Xaba.. the award winning anthropologist, short storyteller and associate Professor of Practice who is also an essayist, poet and editor.
Ms. Helen Nontando (Noni) Jabavu (20 August 1919 – 19 June 2008) was a South African writer and journalist, one of the first African women to pursue a successful literary career and the first black South African woman to publish books of autobiography.
Her work on radio, profiling female artists compels us to playlist accordingly and equally her work with the letters brings a spotlight on music led journals of our time.

As we enter International Jazz Appreciation Month, we are pleased to announce our Sagra, an official International Jazz Day celebration.
A sagra (pronounced like ‘jou ma’) is a local feast or festival where people come together to break bread, and we couldn’t be happier to host this gathering at PACT Centre. The day will feature a full programme of performances, workshops, and moments to connect, as we celebrate and learn together.
This year, the festival officially begins on International Jazz Day with a Sunrise Concert and Opening Ceremony at Krittikom Koppie. From there, we’ll move to PACT Centre for a series of performances, classes, and of course, a shared feast, bringing the spirit of the sagra to life.
In the evening, the celebrations continue with performances by Paul Hanmer and Amy Campbell at NG Kerk and The Showroom Theatre.
This is how we begin Journey to Jazz 2026, in celebration of music, community, and International Jazz Day.
