If I were going to come here and only get one thing (who would even do that? that is preposterous,) I would get the gelatina di maiale. A little light on the gelatina, heavy on the maiale, but it holds together beautifully through sheer force of will and the grace of God. And collagen. Very nice sliced on a sandwich with a few pickled @camporossofarm peppers from last summer. We also have chicken cutlets today and plenty of breads, pastries, etc. We are open until 4pm.
We are still looking for someone to work the counter. If that sounds like something at which you would excel, please get in touch.
We have a spicy pork sandwich in the grand tradition of loose meat sandwiches. We had (past tense) a sandwich with mushrooms sautéed with some tomato and a little crazy mint topped with smoked ricotta, but we couldn’t make a lot and it moved fast. We will make it again. All of your other favorites until 4pm including some really beautiful lettuces. Open today and open tomorrow 10am to 4pm for Mother’s Day.
Remember: Open Thursdays 10am to 4pm.
NOW HIRING FRONT OF HOUSE/COUNTER STAFF. Have some experience in high volume service environments? Able to multitask? Need a job? Get in touch, could be good.
Today! We made a lot of fun items from The Butcher’s Daughter. Tomato bruschetta with zafarani cruschi. Yes, tomatoes are not in season, put aside your virtuous local foodieism and enjoy them, they are delicious. Pitta con rosamarina and pitta chiena with broccoli rabe, mozzarella, and pecorino. Ricotta cookies and torta di riso. @italianbutchersdaughter and Franca Grispino of @altomontes are here signing books. Meet the authors, buy a book, eat some food. We are open until 4pm.
TOMORROW: 2 May from 10am to 1pm we are truly honored to host Maria Teresa Grispino Nappi @italianbutchersdaughter and Franca Grispino of @altomontes and celebrate their book. We are going to try and make a few Calabrese specialties inspired by their recipes in addition to our usual offerings. Come by, grab a signed copy of their book, meet the authors, have some food, hang out.
Our cookies are by far some of the best things we make here. They are also by far some of the lowest selling items we make. Sure, doughnuts are flashy and are a good time, but cookies are for all times. They are loyal and would never turn their back on you. It is a real shame to ignore the cookies. Open until 4pm with a variety of cookies and many other items you might enjoy.
Is it wrong to schedule a book signing just so I can eat everything at Bread & Salt…? 😏
But seriously — if I ever run away, this is exactly where you’ll find me.
Rick’s food tastes exactly like being in Puglia! 🇮🇹😅❤️
Mamma and I will be there Saturday, May 2nd | 10AM–1PM
Come see us, grab a copy of our new cookbook The Butcher’s Daughter, we’ll sign it…
then stay awhile:
✨ caffè leccese
✨ ciambella
✨ incredible pane di Altamura
Great food, good stories, and a taste of Italy without the passport.
We had pork ribs al ragu that we served with the season’s first broccolini, but by the time I was able to actually post this we sold the last of them. They were pretty good. I am going ahead and posting it anyway to encourage you to spend less time on the internet and just show up. We always have at least something you might want to eat whether I take photos of it or not. We do still have cabbage salad and many other items. Open until 4pm.
The real highlight of today’s offerings is the braised lamb (white wine, rosemary, garlic, sneaky anchovy, and a shot of vinegar) and dandelion greens sandwich. We don’t have many. The price is higher than our normal sandwiches and we are certainly losing money on it. Spectacular. Price and value are not the same thing. Definitely worth getting one if you can. Also, mortadella croquettes and all of your usual Saturday favorites. Open until 4pm.
So we made some petto di vitello alla fornara for a nice Sunday special. You might ask, who would order veal breast at the doughnut place? We aren’t entirely sure ourselves, but you should. You really should. We roasted it slowly overnight in the oven and it is a nice thing to eat. Available à la carte to go (great option for lunch or tonight’s dinner) or as part of a four course lunch set that comes complete with a full set up: table, chairs, actual plates, silverware, and some semblance of service. Limited to parties of 1-4. Bring a bottle of wine. Enjoy yourself. This and yes, also doughnuts until 4pm.
Don’t ignore the soup. @camporossofarm broccolo spigarello with borlotti beans and potatoes. Some special sandwiches today: our custom @salumeriabiellese cotechino hard seared with melted @caseificioded schiena d’asino, surprisingly good hothouse tomato, and arugula. With a squeeze of lemon to lift it up a little. Pork with potatoes and pickled peppers. All of this and much more until 4pm.
