RECOGNITION KLAXON! It's official, I am now beer guy. I have been honoured with inclusion in the #ofm30 (an annual list of things they like from the lovely folks at @obsfood ) for my work in branding/anti-branding @newbarnsbrewery . Thanks to @newbarnsbrewery for continuing to allow me to throw my ideas at beer cans, to @thekernelbrewery for taking up the slack on the rest of my income, to @killianfox0 for a nice chat, and to @honeilly for proving once again that Spa Terminus connections are built to last. And congratulations to all the other recipients, especially page-and-real-life neighbour @celestialpeach_uk (buy her book). Please feel free to hire me for non-beer-related design and illustration work, as I only have so many beer-related ideas.

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery 11 Plato Pils. A sequel (prequel?) to 12 Plato Pils, which featured places of interest in Leith, Plzeň & Scranton, PA. This time I chose to highlight six figures of renown from the realms of Scottish and Czech science, art, and sport. Alexander Bain (1810-1877), inventor of the first patented electric clock and fax machine. Williamina Fleming (1857-1911), astronomer who discovered the Horsehead Nebula. Jan Hammer (1948-), composer of the Miami Vice theme and member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Euphemia Allen (1861-1949), composer of the 'Chopsticks Waltz.' Karel Čapek (1890-1938), novelist, playwright, journalist and creator of the word 'robot.' Eliška Junková (1900-1994), race driver and first female Grand Prix winner. Thanks again to the brewery for supporting my silly shit, and I cannot recommend Čapek's 'War With the Newts' more highly.

REHASHED WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Champion Brown Ale. I know, I know, I've posted this before but just wanted to revisit it in its DTC iteration. Feel lucky everyday to work with the folks at Newbarns who allow me to wrap their delicious beers in some extremely silly shit aimed at a very small audience of people who squint at the tiny medals on the Colman's mustard label and wonder.

RECENTISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery @finbackbrewery Cedar Pils. Had kicked around various woodgrain ideas for past Newbarns cans with no takers, so it was nice to finally make use of some old bits and pieces. Also wrapped the can with a subtle woodgrain varnish, which frankly was too subtle to photograph but you'll have to take my word for it.

One of my most favourite and deepest-into-my-bullshit bits of nonsense created for @thekernelbrewery in the days when we hosted Cantillon's Zwanze Day. This was the ticket for the event - I cut, folded, portioned, filled and stapled about 100 of these - if you received one and actually took time to look at it, drop me a line and prove me wrong about the size of the audience for this sort of niche lambic humour. Riso printing by @hatopress if my memory serves.

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Billie IPA. This one was for Billie (RIP), the mascot for the renowned Antwerp beer bar and festival. A nice break from drawing tartans, I wrapped it in some Antwerp-style lace over regal purple. Nice varnish texture on this one too.

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery @fourmanbrewery Screich Hazy IPA. The name refers to the very first light of dawn in Scots, a reference to New Zealand's Sunrise Valley where the hops used are grown. Fourman, a brand new Sussex brewery, evokes the golden age of signwriting in their branding, thus the 1-shot vibes for the can. Goes down easier than enamel.

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Full Moon Harvest NZ IPA. Brewed with @eggershops using hops picked and processed during a lunar eclipse, when the flowers are at their most potent (look it up). Wrapped in a pattern of silvery moons at progressive stages of eclipse. Kind of an odd duck in the overall body of can designs, being more conceptually driven, but I think it's quite lovely - especially in person. Also brought to mind the cover of Fugazi's Red Medicine, which was probably in the back of my mind.

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Mega Burns Scottish IPA. A mega-collaboration of previous collaborating Scottish breweries, this ended up quite comically Scottish, with a simplified tartan of the kind you might find on a plastic tablecloth or a shopping trolley. For some reason it had quite an 80's feel, so I gilded the lily with some zip-o-tone style shading on a silver thistle cup.
