Thank you so much to Janine @uppercasemag for including @braidedgrain in this issue’s article about corn dollies. It’s quite lovely to see images of my work in print!

Happy Easter / Ostara / Spring to all! I’ve spent the morning rifling through Granny Jean’s corn dolly stash for some inspiration. I particularly love the curly top of the lantern, the wheat ear beard on the King and the puffed sleeves on the straw ladies.
The straw has turned a lovely dark golden colour over time, and the seeds have mostly been munched or knocked out - but structurally they’re all still good as new!

If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know that we’re growing some of our own Maris Widgeon wheat this year. It is the heritage wheat variety most commonly used in straw work, because of its long and hollow stems.
We’re very lucky to have a tractor driver / farmer extraordinaire in the family who drilled the seed for us last autumn. I popped down to the farm this afternoon, and it’s looking.. OK. There’s not a lot to see, and it’s a little yellow - but it’s come up and it’s growing, so I’m crossing my fingers for favourable weather conditions this year

Flower Favours. These are made using a five-straw plait stretched carefully into a loop. I make a tiny bouquet of home-grown dried flowers to slot into the corn dolly, and they can be hung on the wall / door / mantelpiece etc.

~SHOP IS CLOSED~
With a busy few months ahead, I’ve decided to close the shop for the month of April. If there’s something you’ve had your eye on, or if you’ve got a special person to buy for this month - I’ll be posting any last-minute orders tomorrow. When it re-opens in May, I’ll have some lovely new products to share with you!

Whilst I manifest a big, bright workshop space, I continue to work from home in the 2mx2m “spare bedroom”. In order to manage and keep things organised and tidy, I’ve taken over the landing, my bedroom, the utility room, shed and loft (also mum and dad’s kitchen, shed, office and greenhouse).
If you’ve bought something from me before, this is where it all gets made, dried, packaged and posted!

A moment of appreciation for Granny Jean’s corn dolly scrapbook from the 1970s - full of handwritten instructions, market sales lists, newspaper clippings and diagrams. True treasure.
