You get to the meet venue, you’re too nauseous to eat a normal breakfast beforehand. You get thru warm ups fine, take your first two squats and you’re starting to feel unstoppable. Third squat comes, halfway up the weight puts you a little bit out of position and you feel and hear your AC joint pop and crunch as you finish the squat. After you celebrate the squat, the worry and doubt starts to creep in, will this affect my bench? I’ve never even benched 500 lbs before, let alone when I might be comprised, and that’s supposed to be my 2nd attempt. Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
Before you know it, the MC says Ben Pevarnik to the platform, 500 is loaded. In this moment, real competitors differentiate themselves from guys who have to make meet recaps explaining why they underperformed every 6 months.
Can you tune out the noise? No one is there to save you. 500 lbs is still 500 lbs. In this moment, do you believe in yourself? Do you trust the work you did to make this weight move? Only you know if you did everything you thought was right to prepare, and didn’t cut corners.
This is why gym lifts don’t matter to competitors. Prove it on the platform.

I thank God as much as I can remember to for allowing me to be able bodied to do this. This meet meant a lot more to me than any other meet I’ve done in the past for a number of reasons, and it feels really great that the plan came together perfectly. I was so anxious the morning of, I barely was able to gag down a 500 calorie sandwhich before the meet, could hardly sleep the night before. Gonna heal up, lick my wounds and ride this high for a couple weeks then it’s back to work, I can’t give the hogs too much time to make up ground on me 😉
