This might be my favorite minute of the entire @insidesjunk set. This just objectively rips. Also: I’ve missed playing big drums. They’re a pain in the ass sometimes, but holy moly are they perfect for stuff like this. Crash riding on a 24” @cymbalcraftsman “50s A” ride is a choice 😂 DRIVE THE BUS.
10 days until I play my first gig with @orkestar_seyir and I’m finally getting the 9/8 stuff to feel comfortable-ish. (Still not comfortable enough to try that opening fill on video yet though haha). It’s such a wildly different way to approach the drumset - I’m having to “unlearn” things that I’ve been doing for decades at this point. 🤯
Practicing my 9/8 for @orkestar_seyir . These are all different sections of the same song (including a slower ending section), with the pulse broken up into 2-2-3-2. It’s generally still felt in 4, with the 3 just being “long”. The stick click count-in is how it’s felt - “one two threeee four”. Even within that standard pulse, there are a lot of ways to break the phrase / accents up. No simple backbeats here! Come see us at @elriosf on May 21st!
New look! Got tired of fighting with my hair. Thanks to my coworker Alasdair for the inspiration and pep talk, and to @charlie_herreravillar for the execution. 🎱 😂
Okay, so I lied about finding the final form. One more change. Replacing a tambourine with a pandeiro. This might be it. (Or might not. Who knows anymore. Everything is bullshit. Do things you enjoy and don’t worry about anyone else. Drums are fun)
Think I’ve found the final form of the kit for @orkestar_seyir . Dropped the 12” rack tom for a tambourine and brought the left side in a bit tighter. Starting to feel a bit more comfortable on it. Not quite there yet though. Sometimes the rim clicks just start taking over and it’s time to turn the camera off 😂
As I’m trying to figure out the logistics of using anything “fun” on a drumkit playing in an originals band (curses, shared backline requirements), I’m having fond memories of playing gigs where I could set up my drums, put a drape over them, and have the openers set up in front. I didn’t know how good I had it hahaha. #outsideroyalty
Trying something completely different for me. Joined a Balkan / tallava group. It’s this unique combination of suuuuper produced / modern stuff with traditional instruments. The percussion section is usually one person on an (acoustic) darabuka and one person on a samplepad (or sometimes a full electric drum kit). I’m trying to do a spin on it with acoustic drums. The samples are usually a mix of hip-hop/trap drum sounds and various hand drums. So I have to try to reproduce all of these acoustically. A 15” snare with the snares off, both heads cranked, and an ice bell on the top head sounds shockingly like the thin / switch side of a tapan. A floor tom with a chain mail pan scrubber becomes a daf. Tambourine jingles on everything for that necessary riq sound. And just for fun measure, let’s put a lot of it in odd times. And through-compose the songs, they don’t really use Western forms. Brain is cooked, but in a lovely way.
Got these Gretsch tubs back from @kirschdrumsportland New wrap, new hoops, new edges. The 8, 10, and 18 join the 12-16-24 that were done previously. Also some new hoops for the 16” white marine pearl kick 😍
