They paired my painting with a poet… and I didn’t know what to expect. This piece, Self, Peace, & Joy, was recently featured in @panoplymichiana sping issue for National Poetry Month where visual artists were paired with poets to create a dialogue between image and word. Reading “No One They Know” by Noelle Canty, I got to see my work from a different perspective. “Sometimes the colors in people are all I see… and only… finally… the shadows.” 🔥 The painting itself was inspired by three young girls I work with capturing a moment of playfulness, presence, and honesty. The poem added another layer… thinking about how we’re seen, or not seen, in those same moments. And I’m grateful that this same piece and another work, Disconnected were both accepted into the Michiana Annual Art Competition (MAAC) at the @box.factory.arts Box Factory for the Arts. Out of all the submissions, 150 works from 124 artists were selected for this juried exhibition, and I’m grateful to be included. 📍 On view: May 15 – July 5, 2026 Opening Reception: May 15 | 5:30–7PM Box Factory for the Arts, St. Joseph, MI If you look at this piece… what do you see first?
