In the early 1960s race relations in Bristol were incredibly fierce and vehement both between people and within legislation. There was a 'colour ban' put in place by Bristol's most popular bus company that mean that Black and Asian could not apply to be drivers, despite a labour shortage. In response, a group of local activists called the Seven Saints of St Pauls, devised a citywide bus boycott that lasted for four months and gained national attention and backing. As a direct result of this, the first non-white bus conductor was employed in Bristol that same year. The boycott can also be linked to the creation of the 1965 Race Relations Act. In the midst of a societal temperament like this, St Pauls Carnival was born.
Originally founded in 1968 by members of the St Pauls community who, many of them, found themselves in the UK after being invited on the Windrush to rebuild the country after a fairly reasonably sized war. The idea was to celebrate the culture that they had taken with them from the Caribbean and, in the words of the 1968 programme, foster 'better understanding, greater respect and increasing harmony' in the community.
From it's humble beginnings, the carnival is now a global showcase of Afro-caribbean culture that celebrates the harmony of so many different histories. The streets effervesce with people flowing to different Sound Systems, music, dance, food, costume and community - St Pauls is a monument to inspiring the masses to connect over all of life's pleasures, and a bottle or two of Magnum.
Many acts have been impassioned by the Sound Systems at St Pauls such as Roni Size, Massive Attack, and (most importantly from a musical heritage stance) me.
St Pauls will always attract an immense crowd and an even more impressive vibe, this is because the nature of music and the arts is that it evolves with the community. But it is important to educate ourselves on the history of the event and the influence that it has had on individuals, communities, cities, countries, music, and thought.

UK NIGHTLIFE GOING DARK ⢠16.02.25
Between June 2020 and June 2024, the UK lost 480 nightclubsâthatâs two closing every week. The situation is worsening, and without intervention, the future of club culture looks bleak.
Nightclubs have been central to UK nightlife since at least the 1980s, evolving alongside dance music movements. The â90s club boom was partly fueled by the crackdown on illegal raves, pushing the underground into licensed venues. This golden era coincided with the rise of jungle, garage, dubstep, and grime, genres that reshaped global music.
That era is fading fast. Skyrocketing energy costs, rent hikes, licensing issues, and post-COVID struggles are strangling clubs, Gen Z now opt for staying inside rather than going out, probably inviting friends to huddle for warmth whilst British Gas burns ÂŁ20 notes in front of pensioners for fun.
Campaigns like @saveoursceneuk and the @musicvenuetrust have done an incredible job of securing funding for grassroots venues introducing a mandatory ticket levy so Swifties, by law, have to give at least some of their ticket cost to the venues that support local talent.
Government support is crucial, but nightlife itself must evolve to survive todayâs world. Thatâs a separate debateâand Iâve already turned this into a ranty Tumblr post from 2009.
As I mentioned, everyone but oil barons and oligarchs are suffering right now but if you can support the underground by going to grassroots events and buying merch then you should.

LOST IN MUSIC ⢠INNER ECHO ⢠13.12.24
@inner_echo_music are a duo that fully embody the sound of Bristol. Low-end-centric music that is deeply rooted in soundsystem culture, with influences from techno, breaks, dubstep, and beyond, laces their sonic signature. This unique fusion shines in their latest release, Lost In Music, on @moonshinerec âa modern dub reggae EP that sounds innovative while staying entirely true to its foundational roots.
The motif of traditional dub elements paired with modern clarity and forward-thinking production is immediately evident in the opening track, âHow I Feelâ. Its captivating atmospheres set the tone for the entire album, layering foundational sounds with ethereal textures and heavy bass weight that you can tell would sound just as good in your headphones as it would in a session.
âLet You Downâ brings a more introspective mood with its shimmering dub chords and arpeggios that is both introspective and immersive.
@donfereggae phenomenal flute in the track âRelentâ introduces a beautiful organic tone over focal point with Dom Feâs flute performance.
The sonic experimentation is rife with âUnseenâ, as it features some of the most intriguing textures I've heard.
Inner Echoâs Lost In Music is a seamless blend of tradition and innovation that showcases their deep respect for the genre while fearlessly pushing its boundaries.
Out now on Moonshine Recordings

FRUCHTIGER RELEASE ⢠BRISTOL ⢠04.02.25
This is one that I had to put on pause for a while (alongside socialising, drinking, and breathing) whilst I went through my exam. Used a lot of field recordings from a trip around the four waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons to create the atmospheres. The Sarangi I've got at the beginning is actually sampled from a Reel but unfortunately the post has been taken down so if this goes viral then that man is missing out on his royalties.
And the title just came to me in a biblical scene when I was about to press export on Ableton and I saw a packet of, barely legal, European strawberry laces with this written on it.

BOOMTOWN REMIX COMPETITION ⢠BRISTOL ⢠12.11.24
I still wasn't quite over (mentally and medically) Boomtown this year when I saw that they announced a remix competition for @samurai_breaks and @kreed_is_dead track The Future Is Now. So I started panting in Boomtown Lung and gave it a crack.
I had a lot of fun playing around with the stems in this track especially since I (and my neighbours) have spent a lot of time listening to the original. Thought I'd slow down the tempo and really lean on the introspectiveness Boomtown promotes with airy pads and delays. Whilst also providing the playground to be a bit hedonistic which is why I kept the original breaks near enough untouched.
Anyway now I'm sad and want to be back there.

Yes, yes, I am the slug that @iambenga put up on his insta. And I'm here with some excellent news
I'm playing PARTY AH KEEP for the @moderadio.london family at @archives_ldn alongside some of the scenes top dons including @wizetheproducer - who is the divine ruler of Grime edits, for those who don't know. And you get to hear it all on the mighty @feltsoundsystem which is the spiritual opposite of putting your Toco Lite in a pint glass playing a YouTube rip of Craig David
@moderadio.london events are always the best way to spend a school night and this one is definitely going to be levels. The effort the team put behind these events is so evident

Wassup people
I've got a German stein sized show tonight on @moderadio.london at 7-9pm.
Was lucky enough to have some of my questions answered by @zha.uk who is the head honcho of one of my favourite labels @whitepeachrecords Honestly such an honour to have him give up his time to educate me on such an influential label. I've also given myself a supersonic migraine trying to pick my favourite tunes from the label for a minimix (see last tile). Tracks are included below -
@sirhissbristol and @emzbars - Rolling
@sorrowgarage - Brawler
Kaido - Kennedy Bridge
@taiko_uk - No More
@eva808_ - Oyuki
@bengalsound - Two Worlds
@modelleboy and @lemzlydale - Majula's Curse
Mr.K - Red Handed
Shudan - Amaterasu
@nelson_nakes - Axe Riddim
@hebbemusic - 3 Tabs
@sukhknight - Nightcrawler VIP
@ourmanmusic - Rezolve
@rygby.uk - Mannulus
@zha.uk - Daisy
@moreofusuk - Back Down
@phossa_uk - Touch
@thatopus - Day & Age
@glume_uk and @phossa_uk - Tusk
Like I said this list is not exhaustive and I could (and probably will) mix their entire discography at some point
Finally, if you're in London then you need to be at @nldc140 tomorrow night. It's a free event so you have literally no excuse and it'll probably be the best decision you've ever made on a Wednesday. Also, @zha.uk will be there playing his tunes better than I did lol
Link to show in my bio xoxo
