Lab Report: Wilson Camera
Any film scene that exists outside of the major hubs of NY and LA are always of particular interest to us. And not just any scene, but a scene with a vibe. Case in point: Phoenix, Arizona. At the crux of this community sits @wilson.camera a place for the hipsters of the desert to convene, develop film, and talk shop.
Their crew throws down events on the regular, pulling the pros and wanna-bes under one roof. They seem to frequent Roberta’s, the local dive which might be reason enough to pay a visit to this corner of the southwest. It took a bit of time, but we were able to wrangle owner @weebermedia for a chat to learn how he’s able to manage running this whole operation.

The plan was to spend a full day with Emily Howe, aka @thevetiver . Our schedules could never quite align however, because of work and life obligations, so we resorted to an afternoon-in-the-life-of instead. Not much will be missed on you the reader, as we believe you’ll get a fine grasp of who Emily is both in front of and behind the lens, what informs her tastes, and when we should expect to see her debut book dropping.
Check the featured conversation with Emily in VOL.01 of our print magazine.

Some magazines inform you. Others transport you.
Born Rival pulls you into the world of the people behind it and the creatives they feature. Rooted in film culture and visual storytelling, it explores that space where the intentional eye meets the subconscious mind.
It feels visually cohesive but also personal, almost like spending time with everyone involved. Happy to be stocking it at TOMO mags. A reminder that slowing down and going out there to create are two approaches that can exist in balance.
What’s always been enticing about @josuastaebler work has not only been the images he makes on screen, which in our opinion stack up against some of the best in the biz shooting 16mm & 35mm, but also how he paints the picture of production and travel throughout his journey. When we were in the early stages of developing the Born Rival ethos, we pointed to Josua’s page frequently. He embodied what the epitome of the brand was all about:traveling to the far corners of this earth with a camera in hand, while having a deep appreciation and preference for celluloid.
After connecting with the German DoP for a chat across the Atlantic, we were reassured that we weren’t fooled by the illusion of what we had seen through social media; Josua is someone who lives and breathes filmmaking - so much so that it’s become ingrained into his way of life.
