The beautifully unforgiving lush yet barren landscape of the Carrizo plainsā¦
STORYTIME!
This past weekend, I went on a ride through the Carrizo plains just north of LA to check out the superblooms. While most of the day was filled with beautiful views, a random encounter with
@shainblumphotography , and epic trails, the end of the day took a turn for the worst. After capturing the epic drone shot in this post, things got a little scary.
As I started to head out and end my trip, I came across several roads that were closed, so I decided to check the map, only the find out that my phone was unresponsive. So I thought, no problem, I have my battery back up. Nope. That was dead too (even though it was fully charged when I left). So I had to backtrack nearly 40 miles by memory with no phone, no map and as I was riding back, my fuel reserve kicked in telling me I was running out of gasā¦
At this point, I legit started to freak out but remained calm. With the sun quickly dipping below the horizon, I finally got on the main road to head back for another 20 miles as my gas dwindled as every mile passed by. 30 min later, it was pitch black. With only my motorcycle headlight guiding the way I felt as lost as ever. With every fork in the road, I questioned my judgment and whether I was in the right road. I stopped to gather my thoughts and assess the situation, only to be hit with the deafening silence of the desert, the cold desert air and pure complete darkness. The kind where you canāt even see your hand in front of your face.
This was the first time I actually felt afraid in a very long time.
With only a bottle of water, trail mix and no shelterāopen to the elements, panic started to kick in.
Just as I was about to continue riding, a couple pulled up in an old school Land Cruiser and asked if I was okay. I half heartedly said āKinda?ā I asked how far the exit was, only to find out that I was 1 mile away along with a gas station 5 miles later. It was just so dark that I couldnāt see it. They helped me get back, and only then did my journey back home to LA begin. At 10pm on the 5 freeway.
