As we look back on the programs we’ve explored over the years, one stands out deeply.
At one point, we worked alongside the foster system,supporting children who had experienced trauma and could benefit from a dog. It was meaningful, important work. But the logistics were incredibly complex. Placing a dog with a child in foster care meant navigating changing homes, reunification, and adoption. Ultimately, it wasn’t a sustainable fit for Canines With A Cause.
But there’s one story we’ll never forget.
Ethan came to live with his grandparents when he was nine. He struggled to sleep and told them, “I can’t sleep at night, but an angel comes to me, it looks like a dog. I think if I had a dog, I could sleep.”
At that same time, we had one of the most special dogs we’ve ever trained. A Border Collie/Basset Hound mix named Marshall. Imagine a Border Collie… just with short legs. He was as unique as he was incredible. Smart and wise beyond measure, Marshall was fostered by our longtime board member, Jenn Booth.
“Ethan’s healing began with Marshall by his side, where he found comfort, safety, and was finally able to sleep nights. Just writing this brings so much emotion back. Bringing the two of them together brought so many happy tears ~ truly heartwarming.” Jenn Booth, CWAC Board member.
When Ethan and Marshall were paired, it was nothing short of magical. They became inseparable. Marshall gave Ethan comfort and the ability to rest something he hadn’t had in so long.
Not every program continues, but some moments remind us exactly why we do this work.
At the heart of it all is the human animal bond. There is something powerful, almost unexplainable, about the connection between a person and their heart dog. Especially for those carrying trauma. It’s trust without words, comfort without conditions, and a sense of safety that can reach places people sometimes can’t.
Ethan and Marshal are just one of hundreds of life saving pairs Canines with A Cause has made over the years.
