Time for another Book Arts Program staff highlight! Jazmin is the Community Outreach & Studio Coordinator and here’s a little bit about her:
How long have you been at the Book Arts Program?
I joined the Book Arts Program in August 2017 so going on 9 years! However, I’ve been involved in the studio as a student, intern and studio monitor since 2011.
What is your art background e.g., what are your degrees in and from where?
I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Teaching with an emphasis in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah.
What do you like most about book arts and teaching?
Book arts combines so many different disciplines including printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, to name a few and seeing what people create continues to amaze me. There are also endless techniques to learn—you’ll never stop experimenting and discovering. I also love being part of the outreach team here at the BAP and love bringing the world of book arts to the community.
What is something that most people may not know?
I teach a pet adoption yoga class with Best Friends Animal Society at Salt Lake Power Yoga every three months :) The next one is May 23rd! I love animals and animal welfare is a passion of mine.
What other interests do you have e.g., hobbies, things you like to do in your free time, etc.
I love hot yoga (practicing and teaching), kayaking, hiking, dancing, concerts, hanging out with friends, family and my kitties.

“Introduction to Leather: Bradel Case Binding”
Lili Hall Sharp
Friday & Saturday, May 15–16
10am–5pm
Interested in learning the basics of working with leather as a covering material for handbound books? Join us to learn Lili Sharp's interpretation of the Bradel Case binding, which veers from the traditional structure. The cover is built entirely off the book as a three-part case and the text block is then cased into it, which allows for the parts of the case to be covered in different materials and permits the binder to design the covers off the book. Participants leave the workshop with basic leather working skills and a three-piece Bradel binding.

It’s time for another Book Arts Program faculty & staff highlight! Sara Luz Jensen is an Assistant Librarian, Studio Manager & Instructor, and Lead Printer for the Red Butte Press. Thank you for all you do Sara Luz!
How long have you been at the Book Arts Program?
I have been in my current position for 2.5 years but before this appointment, I worked at the Book Arts Program as a studio assistant and as a K-12 outreach teacher.
What is your art background e.g., what are your degrees in and from where?
I received my undergraduate degree in English from the University of Utah and a Master in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book.
What do you like most about book arts and teaching?
I’m convinced that the students I teach are some of the most interesting and interested students on campus, and I feel lucky to teach these skills, provide a space for creativity and help students develop and realize their ideas. The book form intrigues me because it is both an accessible and an exacting craft, and producing artists books is both intellectually stimulating and requires an awareness of the body.
What is something interesting/unique about yourself that most people may not know?
I was a classically trained ballerina and danced for over 13 years!
What other interests do you have e.g., hobbies, things you like to do in your free time, etc.
I love kundalini yoga, kayaking and reading sci-fi.
